~ Joe Walker's last words. |
Joe Walker is a minor antagonist in Dexter, featuring in the episode "Those Kinds of Things". He is a former high school quarterback and old classmate of Dexter Morgan whom Dexter targets at a high school reunion after Dexter figures out he murdered his wife.
He is portrayed by John Brotherton.
Biography[]
Joe attended Alan B. Shepard High School alongside Dexter Morgan. During his time at school, Joe, the most popular student at school, dated Janet McKellin, one of the only people who was kind to Dexter. However, despite Joe's popularity, he did have a dark side, regularly beating Janet and keeping her in a controlling relationship. They married soon after leaving school.
At some point, Janet was found dead in their house with a gun in her hand. The death was ruled a suicide, but Dexter, who by this point was working with Miami Metro Homicide, realized that she had blood under her nails, causing him to doubt the official story.
Three years after his wife's death, Joe attends the high school reunion, which Dexter also does, planning to investigate Joe in order to confirm whether or not he killed his wife. In preparation for his investigation, Dexter sharpens his class ring in order to prick Joe with it and collect a blood sample that he can match up to the blood under Janet's nails. However, when he approaches Joe, he opts to greet Dexter by smashing his fists together rather than shaking his hand, forcing Dexter to prick himself.
During the conversation, Dexter asks Joe about Janet's death. Rather than being upset, Joe expresses annoyance that she "left" him and, upon noticing attractive ex-classmate Trisha Billings, mentions his regret for not having sex with her in high school, expressing contempt for Dexter when he points out that he was dating Janet at the time.
Frustrated that his attempt to get a blood sample failed, Dexter signs up for a flag football match, playing on the opposite team to Joe. After his lancet breaks during the match, preventing him from using it, Dexter violently tackles Joe and elbows him in the face, drawing blood, which Dexter collects a sample of. He later runs a test on Joe's sample, matching it to the blood from under Janet's nails and confirming Joe's guilt.
Planning to kill Joe, Dexter attempts to kidnap him, but is waylaid by Trisha, who corners him in the hallway and performs oral sex on him. Although this causes Dexter to miss Joe, it also gives him the opportunity to steal Trisha's phone, which he uses to send Joe a message pretending to be Trisha asking him to come and meet her in the groundskeeper's shed.
When Joe shows up, Dexter attempts to inject him with M99, but Joe fights him off and sees his face. Dexter challenges him to a fight, which Joe eagerly accepts, anticipating an easy victory, but is easily defeated by Dexter, who chokes him into unconsciousness. Joe comes round cling-filmed to a table in the shed, where Dexter interrogates him about Janet's death. Joe admits that he killed her and made it look like a suicide in order to avoid losing money in their upcoming divorce. He also claims that God will never forgive Dexter for killing him, but Dexter responds by asking him if God will forgive him for killing Janet. Joe begins ranting about how he is "a mighty fortress" and God will protect him, at which point Dexter smashes him in the head with a hammer. He then stabs Joe in the chest, finishing him off.
