Greta is a minor antagonist in Gremlins 2: The New Batch, the 1990 sequel to the 1984 horror comedy film Gremlins. She was a Gremlin born from one of members of the titular New Batch and although at first just a standard gremlin after drinking a hormone modification serum she was given female characteristics.
She was voiced by the late Mark Dodson who also voiced Daffy, George, and Lenny in the same film as well as Salacious B. Crumb in Star Wars Episode VI- Return of the Jedi.
Biography[]
Greta was born some time after the mayhem in the TV studios caused by Daffy, George and Lenny which resulted in all three being drenched by shower water and thus spawning numerous gremlins. Initially, Greta was a typical gremlin and joined her fellow creatures in causing mischief throughout the Clamp building however after winding up in the Splice O'Life laboratory she drunk a formula designed to change one's sexual characteristics and was granted stereotypically feminine characteristics. In the laboratory, Greta found Forster while the latter was helping Billy Peltzer and Cushing Catheter with eliminating the threat of the gremlins and immediately fell in love with him and began showering him with unwanted affection much to his horror.
She was next seen during the final dance number involving all of the Gremlins in the lobby where she was presented before an audience of her own kind. Somehow she managed to escape death from the Electric Gremlin combined with the fire hose sprayed into the lobby by Mr. Futterman and instead returned to the laboratory floor where and exhausted and traumatized Forester was now calling for help. Greta wore a wedding dross and tossed a boquet to Forrester while slowly walking towards him with her lips puckered. Although at first resisting Forester gave in and smiled before lowering himself onto the floor, allowing Greta to shower him with affection again.
Appearance[]
Greta had bright green skin with yellow and black portions and stood at roughly 3ft like her fellow Gremlins, she also had long, flowing green hair and wore mascara, lavender eyeshadow and red lipstick on her face and bright red nail polish on her claws. In her first scene she was seen wearing leopard print lingere before switching to a red dress for the final musical number and a wedding dress for the film's ending. In some merchandise she is also seen wearing her first outfit with a pink boa.
Personality[]
Greta was initially just a regular gremlin however after drinking the formula she changed into being more calm than most of her kind and instead of causing random chaos she fell in love with the vice CEO of the Clamp corporation Forester and began to constantly harass him. In spite of this however she still seemed to enjoy her mischievous gremlin ways as she was seen participating in the final dance number in the Clamp Centre lobby.
Trivia[]
- Some suggest that Greta may be a reincarnation of the Deagle Gremlin.
- Thus far, Greta is the only female gremlin and technically the only gremlin who has any kind of specific gender characteristics.
- Greta is one of the only Gremlins who still had hair after turning from Mogwai to Gremlin, sharing this trait with Stripe (his mohawk) and Daffy (his cartoony tufts), although Greta was technically never a Mogwai due to being spawned from another Gremlin instead of a Mogwai.
- Coincidentally, Phoebe Cates (who portrayed Kate Beringer in the series) would have a daughter and second-born child to more well-known actor Kevin Kline four years after Gremlins 2's release, also named Greta (stage name Frankie Cosmos). However, the raising of both of her children would eventually obstruct Cates' career, leading to her retirement from acting in 2001.
