Hello, citizens of- (On-screen: Novalis) My race, the blarg, have a small problem. Our planet has become so polluted, overpopulated, and poisonous, that we are no longer able to dwell here, but I, Chairman Drek, have a solution. We are constructing a pristine new world using the choices of planetary components available. So, what does this mean to you, you might ask? Using highly sophisticated technology, which you couldn't possibly understand, we will be extracting a large portion of your planet and adding it to our new one. Unfortunately, this change in mass will cause your planet to spin out of control and drift into the sun where it will explode into a flaming ball of gas, but, of course, sacrifices must be made. Thank you for your cooperation. (Director: Cut!) And if you don't like it, you can take your whiny, sniveling, snot nosed population, form a line behind me and kiss my- We're still on? Well turn it off, you idiot!
~ Chairman Drek's first and most famous quote.
Drek: So it has come to this. Once I step on this ignition switch, a countdown will commence the end of which signals the destruction of your pitiful world.
Clank: There must be another way to make a home for your people.
Drek: You think that's what this is about?! Who do you think polluted our last world?
I did. This is about one thing and one thing only: CASH! And lots of it! You see, I've been paid for every square inch of my new world. Once the inhabitants move in, I'll begin polluting this world as well, then the whole thing starts all over again! Ah... brilliant.
Clank: Why, you... you... evil little...
(Drek presses button)
Ratchet: Save it, Clank. We have to stop that timer!
~ Drek revealing his true intentions to Ratchet and Clank.

Ultimate Supreme Executive Chairman Drek, also known simply as Chairman Drek, is the main antagonist of the 2002 video game Ratchet & Clank, the first game in the Ratchet & Clank franchise.

He is also supposedly the former archenemy of Clank, since not only Drek is mainly though indirectly responsible for Clank's creation and tried to kill him from the very first moment he escaped from the Blarg robot factory on Quartu, but he also didn't waste time during the final battle on Veldin to tell Clank how disappointed he was for betraying him, admitting also it was a real shame because Clank was a potential and useful resource for Drek's plans of planetary destruction and conquest.

He was voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson, who also voiced the Joker in The Batman, Dark Laser in The Fairly OddParents, Black Samurai in Scooby-Doo! and the Samurai Sword, Ian the Gator in The Princess and the Frog, Goro in Mortal Kombat, Sarevok Anchev in Dungeons & Dragons: Baldur's Gate, Captain Gantu in Lilo & Stitch, Trigon in Teen Titans Go!, Shredder in the 2012 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series, Carlton Duquesne in Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman, Prince John in House of Mouse, Crunch Bandicoot in Crash Bandicoot, Temutai in Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness, Floronic Man in Batman and Harley Quinn, Skulker in Danny Phantom, Gorilla Grodd and Captain Cold in Lego DC Comics Super Heroes: Justice League vs. Bizarro League, Jabba the Hutt in Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

Biography[]

Chairman Drek was native to the planet Orxon and was the leader of the Blarg race. In the events of Ratchet & Clank, he and his army were attempting to create a new planet by taking chunks of different planets and adding them to their new world after Drek severely polluted Orxon and the planet's population grew at an unbalanced pace, killing anyone that got in his way of creating their new home. A diminutive robot named Clank was horrified at his intentions and fled the planet Quartu by stealing a Blarg ship, but was shot down by Drek's troops and crash-landed on planet Veldin, where he would meet a Lombax named Ratchet and would team up to find the galactic superhero Captain Qwark and stop Drek. When Drek noticed Ratchet's ship departing Veldin, he ordered a shaded figure (later revealed to be Captain Qwark himself, as Drek secretly hired him to be the spokesman of the new planet) to "take care of them."

Drek posted videos of his intentions of creating the new planet by extracting large chunks of them, thus causing the planets that were damaged to end up hurtling out of orbit and into the sun, killing the planet's populations and destroying the planet itself in the process. Meanwhile, Ratchet and Clank finally found Qwark in Blackwater City on planet Rilgar and he agreed to help them and told the duo to meet him at his HQ on planet Umbris. Qwark has the duo run a death course to "prove themselves to him", and the famous superhero betrayed them, leaving them to fight off the Blargian Snagglebeast, which failed to kill them. This frustrated Drek and he gave Qwark a second chance to kill the two heroes or he would be fired.

Eventually, he had Qwark use a Blarg ship to fight Ratchet and Clank at the Gemlik Moonbase. Ratchet confronted him again, but despite Qwark's efforts, he failed again and was shot down and Drek fired him. Afterwards, it is revealed through an infobot that Drek had his men assault planet Oltanis to steal their electricity and "destroy everything that doesn't move", leading to Ratchet & Clank immediately travelling to it in order to minimize the damage that Drek's men would cause.

Drek then begins to get frustrated with the two's constant foiling of his plans, so he decides to send an elite team of Blarg members after the two, hoping that they would finally get rid of the duo, although the two successfully avoid them and find out Drek's plans to destroy Veldin through an infobot found on Quartu inside his robot factory, leading to Ratchet getting angry and declaring that Drek will found out what happens when he threatens his home planet. The two then travel to Veldin and battle through all of Drek's forces before finally meeting Drek himself, waiting for them in a giant mech.

After confessing he was responsible for the pollution on Orxon and revealed his intentions to start a cycle of planet polluting and restoring for the sake of profit, he activates a laser to destroy Veldin, but Ratchet and Clank deactivate it and send his mech falling onto the surface on his new planet with him still inside it. Ratchet then activates the laser after it ends up pointed at the new planet and destroys it, killing Drek. It is unknown what became of the Blarg upon Drek's demise.

Quotes[]

This could be a problem. Take care of it.
~ Drek seeing Ratchet and Clank leave Planet Veldin and ordering Quark to dispose of them.
So you see, it would be most beneficial if your citizens were not in the city when my workers begin removing it. (Preposterous! I will not stand for this!) Unfortunately, you have no choice in the matter. (Let's just see what Captain Qwark has to say about that, my good man!) [Drek laughs] (I don't see what's so funny. Captain Qwark could dispatch you without even breaking a sweat! You, you puny-) [Drek stops him] You have now officially worn out your welcome, and my patience! [Robot grabs Mayor] (This is your last chance! Stop this madness now!) Okay, wait... you're right, I will withdraw my troops! (Really?) No! He's all yours, gentlemen! Try not to leave any marks!
~ Chairman Drek with the Mayor of Novalis
Back so soon? (...Oh, you're talking to me!) I'm not on the habit of talking to myself, you buffoon. Did you get rid of them? (Yes! No, well I- I had this plan and I thought-) You thought? You thought!? I do the thinking around here, you slug-brained idiot! I simply needed you to eliminate those two nuisances before they could cause any real trouble! (But I wanted to-) Do you still want to be the highly paid spokesman for my planet? (Yeah.) Then the next time I send you to do a job, I want results! Now get out of my sight!
~ Chairman Drek reprimanding Qwark over his failure to eliminate Ratchet & Clank.
This is starting to become annoying. I'm not sure why I bother with you incompetent idiots. Alright, I'll try this one more time. You are my most elite troops. I'm sending you down to the planet's surface to destroy those troublemakers! Now go! Oh, and if you have to destroy Gadgetron to get rid of them, so be it!
~ Chairman Drek commanding his troops.

Trivia[]

  • Though he at first seems to be a humorous extremist, he ultimately turns out to be one of the evilest villains in the Ratchet and Clank series.
  • In keeping with the series' penchant for toilet/off-color humor, "Drek " in Slovene, Yiddish and other languages, translates into the swear word "s#!t", meaning dung, poop, feces, etc..
  • During development of Up Your Arsenal, Mike Stout suggested that Drek would return but the rest of the developers immediately shot down his idea.
  • In his review of Ratchet & Clank, Gavin Frankle of Allgame stated that Chairman Drek's scenes (along with Captain Qwark's) proved to be more entertaining than those of the main characters.
