Abstract

Disaster prevention education covers disaster risks and their management, and practice in disaster escape. The aims of this study were to integrate internet of things (IoT) programming education into mudslide disaster prevention education and to explore the effects of this approach on elementary students’ mudslide concepts and computational thinking. This study had a quasi-experiment design. Four classes of fifth-grade students (n = 105) in one elementary school participated for 10 weeks. Two classes comprised the experimental group, and the other two classes comprised the control group. Students in the experimental group had significantly higher computational thinking test scores than did students in the control group; mudslide test scores did not differ significantly between groups. These results the use of IoT programming in mudslide disaster prevention education to improve children’s computational thinking.
