AMERICAN WIREHAIR | The wiry coat like steel wool defines the breed as distinct from all other cat breeds. The coat is relatively soft to the touch but springs back into place when stroked. Discovered in Vernon, New York, America in 1966, the breed was recognised in 1977. Unlike the Cornish, German and Devon Rex, the wirehair is due to a dominant gene and therefore does not always breed true.
