Olympic Games - 1960 Rome

The 1960 Olympics, the XVII Olympiad was awarded to Rome in 1955 to beat out Lausanne, Detroit, Budapest, Brussels, Mexico City and Tokyo. There were 5,338 athletes (4,727 men and 611 women) competing in 150 events in 17 sports. It is remembered for performances from Wilma Rudolph, Abebe Bikila, Casius Clay, Herb Elliot and Rafer Johnson. South Africa appeared for the last time under its apartheid regime and Singapore competed for the first time under its own flag

Al Oerter won the third of his four Olympic gold medals for the discus in Tokyo in 1964. Six days before competition, he tore rib cartilage when he slipped on a wet concrete throwing area, causing internal bleeding and severe pain. He ignored medical advice not to compete and won with a then Olympic record of 200 feet, 1 inch.
