Financial firms’ digital infrastructures continue to increase in complexity, in part because some elements of the trade process are outsourced to third parties, and in part because trading depends on a wide variety of technologies. Consequently, it is essential that firms monitor all critical systems, data flows and processes to detect, respond to, and recover from any emerging issues that might threaten or interrupt their ability to operate. In this article, GreySpark and ITRS explore the pitfalls firms can face when they fail to comprehensively monitor market data in real-time and what can be done to avoid them. Fulfilling FCA requirements for algorithmic trading remains a challenge for financial institutions. In a recent engagement, GreySpark Partners enabled its client, a large financial institution, to fulfill these regulatory requirements by providing a gap analysis, after which the client was able to plan and undertake remediation activities. The definition of investment risk has evolved significantly this decade, with investors increasingly factoring in the environmental, social and governance (ESG) attributes of a company as part of their investment analysis processes. A fresh approach to this is harnessing the power of generative AI, which can quantify the ESG impact of a firm by providing a dollar-weighted risk-return profile and provide sentiment analysis that goes beyond traditional methods. The UK's transition to a T+1 trade settlement period is gaining momentum. This structural shift should reduce market and counterparty risks, improve liquidity and crucially, bring the UK into alignment with the US market, which transitioned to a shortened T+1 settlement period in May 2024. To learn more about how this will impact the UK's capital market, take a look at our latest Substack article (link in comments).

Interesting piece recently published by our Capital Markets Intelligence unit
Naked short selling is coming increasingly under the regulatory microscope, with the latest high profile case seeing the Financial Services Commission (FSC), South Korea’s financial regulator, imposing a total penalty of KRW 26.5 bn (USD 20.4 million) on two global conglomerates in 2023. However, detecting and preventing short selling activity is not easy, with a lack of standardisation toward implementing necessary procedural controls. GreySpark’s three-pronged approach to short-selling can go a long way in helping firms strengthen controls against illegal short-selling. For more information on GreySpark’s short selling approach, please feel free to reach out to me. https://lnkd.in/erwtH68i

Created to escape the centralisation and control of financial intermediaries, the cryptoasset industry is, ironically, now one of the main developments in capital markets. 2024 has seen growing institutionalisation and maturation of the sector, which is apparent in the rising institutional cryptoasset trading volumes seen this year. Below, GreySpark takes a closer look at the factors driving these higher institutional cryptoasset trading volumes. https://lnkd.in/e_6GgiVq
