Marriage is a delicate dance, but Georgie and Mandy seem to have all the right moves.
Like its predecessor, Young Sheldon — and before it, The Big Bang Theory — Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage delivers a main title sequence to remember. Not three minutes into its series premiere, the CBS comedy unveils an elaborate opening wherein series stars Montana Jordan and Emily Osment engage in a provocative tango — which, according to series co-creator Steve Holland, is meant to represent the “push-pull dance” of their fiery relationship.
“We were looking for something that would be interesting and eye catching — especially coming off of Big Bang and Young Sheldon, where the main title segments were always a big, identifiable piece of those shows,” Holland tells TVLine. His fellow co-creator (and BBT franchise veteran) Steve Molaro “came up with the idea for the tango, and it just felt perfect in that, at the core of this relationship, there’s a lot of passion… but there’s also a lot of struggle, and there’s fire, and there’s fighting…. It seemed like it would be unexpected, and unique, and we started to get excited about that.” Then came “the fun of getting to go to Emily and Montana and saying, ‘Hey, we’ve got this idea.'”
Osment admits that it was “slightly terrifying” when Molaro sat them down and explained the concept. “There’s the immediate reaction of fear,” she says with a laugh, “and then you get excited about it. Montana and I worked with [Jonathan and Oksana Platero], two incredible choreographers from Dancing With the Stars, and we just had the best time.”
Jordan, meanwhile, had no idea what he was in for, telling TVLine, “We might have done a little bit of two-stepping down in Texas, but that’s about it. We definitely weren’t doing no tangoing. It wasn’t on my bucket list, but I’m glad I know it now. And I feel a whole lot looser now that I’ve done those moves.”
The choreography, of course, was only one piece of the puzzle. “We put a lot of thought into how it would look and where it should take place,” Holland explains. He and his fellow producers asked themselves, “Should it take place on a ballroom stage or on a dark set? And we thought it was better that it was on our set. There’s something more interesting about all of this happening in the kitchen, and in the living room, with this domestic background [that is] stylistically heightened. And our [director of photography] Buzz [Feitshans IV], who was our DP on Young Sheldon… did a really great job. We smoked the stage, we had different colored lights coming through the windows… it just looks amazing.”
Last but not least was wardrobe — and it was Jordan’s footwear that ultimately caused the most debate. “We were going back and forth because they didn’t know if they wanted me in cowboy boots, or if they wanted me in dance shoes,” Jordan recalls. “Because in Young Sheldon, I was in Converses all the time, you know? But I was fighting for some cowboy boots… and they finally give into me.”

Really good first episode. I was skeptical at first like I was when I first watched Young Sheldon, but I really enjoyed it alot. Thought it was funny and had a lot of heart.
Agreed, thought it was a really solid start. Everything tvline said in their review was spot on. The actors are obviously experienced in front of the live audience and it showed.
Good start, but I wish we could’ve gotten more scenes with Mary and Meemaw, though.
I really enjoyed it and loved the tango start. My only complaint is that I hope they dial back the mother’s criticism of everything. It’s already getting old. I love Will Sasso and he and Georgie have a great bond. It was also nice to see MeeMaw and Mary. Georgie and Mandy are so cute together and I’m already in.
If I stop watching for any reason, it’s going to be Mandy’s mother. That’s why I gave up on Bob Hearts Abishola: I couldn’t stand Bob’s screechy, whiny mother.
I thought I was the only one!
I agree, she is SO annoying. If that character is gone after 10 episodes I’d be okay with that. The rest has potential.
Kinda slow to start but then it got better. The moment Georgie stood up for Mandy, then the emotional moment about his dad got me. I’ll keep watching
I admit I was very skeptical, but I really enjoyed it. I’m not sure which relationship I enjoyed more… Georgie and Mandy or Georgie and her dad.
I hope it continues to be this good and that they continue to bring in Georgie’s family.
Agreed! As much as I enjoy Georgie & Mandy together, I think Georgie hit the father-in-law jackpot with Jim & I look forward to more scenes of them together!
We are one episode in and I already want them to kill off Mandy’s Mom. She was awful on Young Sheldon and now she is insufferable. The fact that she hates Georgie, a hard working good man, and tolerates her own son being a jobless loser makes her an even worse character than before.
Agree. And I’m not crazy about the rewriting of Mandy’s brother either.
I really enjoyed the show, Georgie and Mandy have great chemistry. They need to re-write or get rid of Mandy’s brother, he didn’t add anything to the show and dial down the criticism from the mother-in-law, it’s really getting old. It was nice to see Meemaw, I look forward to watching the next episode.
It almost seem like they are thinking ‘we need an odd, quirky character’ and without their goto Sheldon to fill that role have just created one with her brother. Thankfully he was a minor part but the show really doesn’t need that, not every show needs an oddball.
And yeah the mother is going to get boring quickly if they don’t change her. It might work fine as a quest star but they have to add depth and get her in general over this dislike of Georgie and the friction with Mandy.
It got funnier as it went along. I hope MeeMaw and Mary are regulars. Mandy’s dad gets the best lines.
The tango was kinda cool but the music in the intro and all of the transitions just felt jarring and opposite of the show’s feeling. Hoping the music doesn’t last.
This is how I felt. It was good but not the best choice in my opinion
I can probably live with it in the intro BUT the scene transitions got annoying really quickly. They just seem too long, too pronounced and just didn’t fit the style. Transition music should either be more simple like with big bang or atleast fit the style like with Friends
I liked it. There were several moments when I laughed out loud. I’ll definitely keep watching.
I liked it, but wasn’t a fan of the laugh track. I think they should shoot it more like Young Sheldon. Will definitely watch, but hope the laugh track doesn’t get old.
A live audience isn’t a laugh track.
they add in a laugh track usually to “assist” with audience laughter as they cannot depend on it. So it’s a mix of both. Or so I have always read.
We agree!! Do not like the laugh track.. Should be like young Sheldon was..
It was a good premiere. Not great, but solid. The single camera and audience gives it a different tone to YS… a good thing as the show can distinguish itself. The leads have great chemistry.
That hug scene man that got to me
The Tango opening was horrible. The rest of the show was pretty good.
I will probably watch a few more episodes but won’t commit to the whole season. I hate the laugh track. Did they think they needed it?
The biggest difference between Young Sheldon, and this one is that the young Sheldon characters were all likable. The character of Mandy’s mother is far from likable, and the father is spineless.
And I’ll say it again…the laugh track is horrible and detracts from this, currently, “just ok” show.
It’s filmed in front of a live audience. .
I read that the show was, in fact, filmed before a live audience. Very odd though, that the laughter sounded so fake and canned.
It was okay. I DO NOT like the canned laughter. It distracts from the dialogue. Get rid of the laugh track. Young Sheldon was hilarious and no laugh track was used.
Well its not a laugh track. It is the studio audience laughing…..same as on “The Big Bang Theory”
Hate the opening and hate the stupid Tango music in between scenes.
Same. Most of these Chuck Lorre shows do the same thing of using bits of the theme song or similar sounding music in the scene transitions; it’s really aggravating to me when it shouldn’t be.
The tango start was the best part. I found it slow and plodding.
I enjoyed the premiere. It made me laugh and I also got a bit misty-eyed with the poignant scene between Georgie and Jim. The hug got me (as another watcher also posted). It made me miss George. The switch from single cam to multi-cam was smooth. I loved TBBT, so filming before a studio audience is nothing new and has no impact on whether I enjoy a series or not. I think I am going to enjoy the new spin-off. I like the McCallisters, especially Jim and I like what they bring to the table. Looking forward to the new season. The fiery dance intro was unexpected and fun to watch. I can absolutely see it representing Georgie and Mandy’s young marriage, especially if they do happen to at some point, separate and get married again down the road. Also loved seeing Mary and MeeMaw again.
I liked it except the tango opening credits.Mandy’s mom is awful &I get why Mandy wants to leave
The two leads are great and definitely the jewels of the show along with the always good will sasso. Looking forward to more
Change the opening.
Ditch the laugh track or at least make it MUCH quieter.
Filmed in front of a live studio audience, like TBBT. Not a laugh track.
I am 80 years old but have watched TBBT repeatedly and have really enjoyed it.
It is clever and entertaining.
I look forward to watching this new adventure with Georgie and Mandy.
Montana Jordan who plays Georgie impressed me the most on the series premiere. He was a true leading man having great chemistry with the entire cast. Also he showcased a seamless transition from single cam to multi cam. His actions and responses were all authentic. And that’s why the hugging scene at the shop worked so well. And it wasn’t able to bring up feelings about the father on Young Sheldon. So I say the pilot was awesome. It usually takes a while for comedies to hit their stride.
The hugging scene was able to bring up feelings about the father on Young Sheldon.
The best part was when Mary and Memaw visited. I like Georgie and the father in law,Mandy and her mother not so much.
