When you first create your Gravatar account, you’ll notice that it can be accessed from https://gravatar.com/username, where username
is your username. If you’re a new user this is random generated. If you’re coming from WordPress.com this will be your WordPress.com username. It’s possible to change this username, but please be aware that once you change your username you cannot change back to what you had previously.
As the username that forms part of your Gravatar profile URL is shared with WordPress.com, be aware that changing your Gravatar Profile URL will also change your WordPress.com username.

If you change your username on WordPress.com, this will also change your Gravatar Profile URL.
Steps to change your Profile URL from Gravatar
- Navigate to https://gravatar.com/profile
- In the left sidebar you’ll see an area showing your username, along with the options to
Change
andShare
. ClickChange
- After clicking
Change
you’ll be greeted with the following screen
- Be sure to note the warning: when changing your Profile URL …be aware that you can’t change it back. It will also affect the username of your WordPress.com account. Click the

button to find out more information. - If you’re confident that you want to change your username, highlight the username portfion of your Gravatar URL, erase it, and replace it with your desired username. In the example above, if you had the username
gravatara2ba6df0be0
you would replace this with your desired username. - If the username you want to use is already taken you will see the following notice:
- If the username you want to use is available you’ll be shown the following instead.
- Please pay special attention to the information presented to you. This screen displays what you are changing your Gravatar Profile URL to, as well as what you are changing your WordPress.com username to. As noted, this change cannot be reversed–it is permanent.
- If you are certain you want to change your username, enter the word
CHANGE
in the text field with the descriptionENTER CONFIRMATION WORD
. After that, click the blueConfirm
button. - Once your profile URL has been changed, you will be logged out of both Gravatar.com and WordPress.com.
- Sign back in with your new username to begin using it.
