Ohio State records 40-plus point win vs Charlotte despite apparent Jaloni Cambridge injury
Despite missing freshman Jaloni Cambridge for nearly the entire second half, Ohio State women's basketball picked up a 94-53 victory over Charlotte at Value City Arena on Tuesday.
Much like a week ago during Cambridge's debut in which she scored 31 points, the point guard showed an ability to stuff the scoresheet. In the first half, she had 8 points and two steals.
But less than 30 seconds into the second half, Cambridge went down on a hard foul and left the game with a lower-back injury. Cambridge was taken into the locker room following the hit, but she returned to the bench before the quarter concluded.
After the game, Ohio State coach Kevin McGuff said he doesn't believe Cambridge suffered a long-term injury but pointed out he had yet to speak to the trainers.
Junior transfer Chance Gray scored 31 points for Ohio State, a career high.
During the offseason, Gray made the move from Oregon to Ohio State. She got off to a slow start in her Buckeyes debut, failing to score a basket until the fourth quarter against Cleveland State.
On this night, Gray went 9 for 14 from beyond the arc, tying Kelsey Mitchell's 2015 program record for made 3-pointers in a game.
"I honestly didn't know (I was about to tie the record)," Gray said. "I was kind of confused why I was still in the game, and then toward the end, they were like, 'You have one minute to make one more 3,' So, went in there and just pulled something, and it went in."
Charlotte scored just 6 points in the first and was held scoreless from the 6:10 mark with the Buckeyes going on a 17-0 run to finish the quarter.
Gray scored more points in the quarter than the Charlotte team with 9.
Taking a 19-point lead after 10 minutes of play, McGuff went to the shallow Ohio State bench. The Buckeyes have 14 players on their roster, but McGuff is using only 10, with the other four being considered for possible redshirt years.
Freshman Elsa Lemmila has been the first off the bench for Ohio State in the first two games, replacing graduate forward Ajae Petty when entering. Standing at 6 feet 6, Lemmila is one of the players McGuff is hoping to impact the Buckeyes' rebounding.
Ohio State still struggled on the glass against Charlotte, losing the rebounding battle 36-34. Lemmila grabbed seven of those boards.
"We didn't really have the best rebounding night," Gray said. "So, we were just trying to make sure we were staying on the boards. That was the emphasis at halftime."
Ohio State, ahead 43-17, was on defense to start the second half with Charlotte being given possession. Guard Kay Kay Green missed the first shot of the half, allowing Cambridge to grab the defensive rebound and make a fast break.
While going up for a layup, Cambridge was fouled underneath the basket by Keanna Rembert, leading to Cambridge's injury.
Without Cambridge on the court, Gray took full control and scored 14 points in the third.
Fellow transfer Petty, who joined Ohio State from Kentucky, also finished in double digits, recording 12 points. Junior Cotie McMahon had 11.
The Buckeyes head on the road for the first time this season when they face Belmont on Sunday at 3:00 p.m.
