Synopsis[]

Sonic and Tails respond to a distress call from the Labyrinth Zone. It's New Year, and Tails is beginning to question whether they're having any effect. After all, Robotnik is as powerful as ever.

They are attacked by Moto Bugs, which they easily destroy. However, they plunge into the water below, and Sonic can't swim! Sonic is sucked down by a new machine of Robotnik's, preventing him from getting a footing on the ocean bed. Tails swims to the surface looking for help, but suddenly sees Troopers capturing Labyrinth Zone residents. He is torn between helping the civilians and helping his friend, but quickly decides to destroy the Troopers and save the animals from being turned into Badniks.

Meanwhile, underwater, the whirlpool slows down to recharge, giving Sonic a chance to get his footing. He is attacked by Jawz, which he swiftly destroys before finding an air bubble to refresh his oxygen. Sticking to the ocean floor, he is immune to the worst affects of the whirlpool when it starts up again, and he crashes into the source of it with his spin attack. The machine explodes, shooting Sonic out of the water and back onto dry land!

On the surface, Tails has destroyed the Troopers and freed the people. Sonic assures him that he made the right choice, since a cool blue hedgehog can get out of any trap. Helping people is more important. Tails' hope in their mission is restored - they maek the world better with every person they save. Sonic is put off by the sentimentality, but agrees to a New Years resolution: to keep fighting Robotnik, no matter how long it takes!
