Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, known as Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection in PAL regions, is a video game compilation of forty-nine Sega titles, and the sequel to Sega Genesis Collection. It was developed by Backbone Entertainment and released for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 by Sega.

Much like its predecessor, besides compiling forty games from the Sega Mega Drive, with seven being from the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection includes nine unlockable classic Sega as well as arcade and Sega Master System games, museum menus, and extras. Many of its titles were included in Sega Genesis Collection.

List of games[]

Unlockable games[]

Gameplay[]

Each of the games in Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection can be upscaled to high-definition (720p). Also, through the use of an optional screen filter, the graphics can be de-pixelated. Each game is as well given three save-states that players can use to save the respective games at any point and then restart from that point later. In addition, there are options to adjust the volume levels of the Game Sound, Music, and FX. Each game also has a Museum page with history, trivia pieces, tips, facts and strategies about the games, and box artwork and cartridge scans. The compilation also includes an Extras page containing unlockable content such as interviews with developers developer about the individual games and additional arcade and Sega Master System games.

Development[]

According to Ethan Einhorn, the producer for Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, Knuckles in Sonic 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and Blue Sphere, all of which used the lock-on technology, were not included due to "tight development times", and that including them would have meant "dropping several titles from the collection altogether", specifically nine unlockable games since "they all required unique emulation solutions".[3][4]

Trivia[]

MoreClearCoverMistake

The back of the cover says "Sonic the Hedgehog 2," but it shows Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

  • This is the last Sonic game to feature Greg Martin's artwork on the cover.
  • On the back of the game's cover, there is a mistake. There is a caption saying Sonic the Hedgehog 2. However, the image shows Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
  • In the manual on page seven, it says that the original Sonic the Hedgehog took place on Emerald Island, when it really took place on South Island. Emerald Island does not even exist.
  • This is the only game for the PlayStation 3 that has Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic & Knuckles since PSN is the only online service which does not offer these two games as stand-alone downloadable titles (at least for the current versions of the PS3; unless the player does not own the Slim and Super Slim models but does own the Launch and second generation models, they can still play PlayStation 2's version of Sonic Mega Collection Plus).
