Emerald chamber

The Emerald Chamber with the Chaos Emeralds.

The Emerald Chamber is a location that appears in the Sonic the Comic series published by Fleetway Editions. It is a large room in the centre of the Floating Island which is the main resting place of the Chaos Emeralds and the Master Emerald. It also contains many of the Floating Island's control systems, allowing Knuckles the Echidna to keep watch over the island from a central location.

The Emerald Chamber consists of a large room, hewn out of rock by the ancient Echidnas. The Emeralds themselves are suspended in a column of light (apparently composed of chaos energy) over a deep pit.

The Emerald Chamber is located within the Hidden Palace.[1]

An alcove in the corner of the room is set aside for the decapitated head of a Guardian Robot formerly owned by Doctor Zachary.[2]

Production background[]

In its earliest appearances (beginning in Sonic the Comic #49, "Count Down to Disaster, Part 1", part of Sonic the Comic's Sonic & Knuckles adaptation), the Emerald Chamber looked slightly different than its later form. There was no column of light and the Master Emerald rested on a floating stone platform (resembling those from the Hidden Palace Zone in Sonic & Knuckles). The Chamber was redesigned into its final form by artist Nigel Dobbyn in Sonic the Comic #65, "The Homecoming, Part 1", which also introduced Doctor Zachary and the Guardian Robots.

A similar structure called the Temple of Chaos appeared previously in Sonic the Comic #36, "Power of the Chaos Emeralds, Part 2". The six Floating Island Chaos Emeralds were kept there until recombined with the six Mobian Chaos Emeralds. The Temple of Chaos also kept the Emeralds suspended in a giant column of light, although the Temple was located outside under the stars, whereas the Emerald Chamber is indoors in the heart of the island.
