Abstract
The development of the Internet as a scholarly communication tool and the subsequent (apparent) decline of the print journal are causing great changes in historical systems of scientific communication. Not all of these changes have been positive. The two‐decades long “serials crisis” in subscriptions costs, paired with the increasing recognition that copyright management is of vital importance to the flow of information, has prompted many in scholarly communication fields to call for a sea change in how scientists formally share information. At the same time, the Internet offers novel means of transforming scholarly communication beyond the idea of the traditional journal. We are experiencing the birth pangs of this transformation now. Scientists and libraries are faced with many questions surrounding legal, social, and political issues in the scholarly sphere. These include copyright, peer review, tenure and promotion practices, cost, access versus ownership, and archiving. Speakers will discuss those issues in light of projects and new journals being published in a variety of venues, particularly evolutionary ecology and computer science research.
