Shunt-connected active power filters (APF) are a well-established solution for mitigating current harmonics in electrical grids. Nevertheless, the combined impedance of the grid and connected equipment can introduce resonances at specific frequencies. Implementing proportional-resonant control may prevent APFs from worsening power quality by injecting harmonics at these resonant frequencies. Moreover, this control strategy applies to all types of APFs, regardless of their number of wires, and eliminates the need for complex synchronization and harmonic detection algorithms. The effectiveness of the proportional-resonant control method is experimentally validated using a silicon carbide-based APF connected to the electrical grid.
