Our digital gadgets are often blamed for introducing unprecedented levels of distraction, but
how might we recognize and harness the attentional possibilities such an environment
offers? This editorial essay introduces a special issue of DHQ devoted to thinking about
distracted reading, and sets out an agenda and a context for our exploration of distributed
