“ | Colm can wait. Best to get some of them outta there. And much less fun to rob him and his score if he never finds out about it. | „ |
—Dutch van der Linde to Arthur Morgan |
Old Friends is a mission in Red Dead Redemption 2.
Mission Overview[]
Looking for information on the O'Driscolls' planned train job, Dutch leads the gang to attack their camp at Ewing Basin.
Story[]
Arthur enters the men's shack at Colter and finds Micah Bell and Bill Williamson arguing. The fight almost turns violent before Dutch enters and scolds Bill and Micah, saying that Colm O'Driscoll is the one who needs hitting. As the gang members head to their horses, Arthur asks if attacking their long-time rivals is right given the gang's current state. Dutch tells Arthur to stop doubting him and says that they need more information if they want to hit the train the O'Driscolls were planning to rob. Dutch gives Arthur a Carbine Repeater and a lasso and the gang set out.
On the way, Dutch sees hoofprints in the snow and they follow them. He reminds the others about his hate towards Colm after he killed Dutch's lover Annabelle and how their rivalry began after Dutch killed Colm's brother in retaliation. The gang soon reach a cliff edge overlooking the O'Driscoll camp. Dutch assigns different positions to Micah, Bill, Javier Escuella and Lenny Summers before he and Arthur scope out the camp. Using binoculars, they see Colm on his horse, shouting at and hitting one of his men, who then leaves on horseback in fear. Colm follows suit, but Dutch decides that they shouldn't deal with him yet. Dutch and Arthur slowly creep down towards the camp unseen, during which Dutch reassures Arthur that this is not a revenge mission, merely a way to find more food and supplies.
After taking cover in the camp, the player has the option of firing the first shot themselves or let Dutch do it instead. Regardless, the gang engage the O'Driscolls in a gunfight and soon defeat them. As they search the bodies, a gunshot erupts from the woods as more O'Driscolls attack. After dealing with them, the gang search the camp; Micah finds some plans for the train robbery and Arthur finds some explosives in one of the buildings. Their mission accomplished, the gang members begin their ride home. Dutch congratulates his men on a job well done and proudly tells them that they will always be one step ahead of their enemies, outsmart them and never be beaten.
As it gets dark, Dutch sees the same O'Driscoll Colm assaulted earlier standing ahead of them. The O'Driscoll panics and rides off, so Arthur chases him and easily catches up before hogtieing the man and putting him on his horse. Arthur then heads back to camp with the O'Driscoll, whose name is Kieran Duffy, whimpering and begging for mercy the whole way.
Back at Colter, Arthur brings Kieran to Dutch, who tells Bill and Uncle to tie their captive up in the barn and starve him, despite Kieran insisting that he hates the O'Driscolls. Dutch congratulates Arthur and assures him they will get Colm eventually.

- Complete within 15 minutes and 30 seconds.

Gold Medal Objective tips
Catch and hogtie Kieran within 45 seconds.
- A quick way to do this is by simply killing his horse the moment you see him, then throw your lasso at him and hogtie him. This will drastically save you time (keep in mind, you will lose minor honor for killing the horse).
Complete within 15 minutes and 30 seconds.
-Skip all cutscenes
-Quickly kill all enemies at the camp. Don't waste your time looting all the bodies. Just loot one or two then rush to defend the second wave of O'Driscolls. After that you can loot the rest of the bodies.
Kill 3 O’Driscolls in the same Dead Eye use.
-Make sure three enemies are in the open when defending the second wave, then activate dead eye and aim at three O’Driscolls at vital points (their heads).
Mission Failure[]
The mission will fail if the player:
- Assaults, kills or abandons any member of the gang;
- Allows any member of the gang to be killed;
- Alerts the O’Driscolls prematurely;
- Kills the fleeing O'Driscoll;
- Lets the O’Driscoll escape;
- Kills or abandons their horse;
- Dies.

Trivia[]
- This mission unlocks Dead Eye Targeting.
- If Arthur puts the Carbine Repeater back on the horse after picking it up, Dutch will make a comment on it.[1]
- If the player spared the O'Driscoll in the mission "Outlaws from the West", he will appear in the cabin in front of the gang after Arthur and Dutch get in cover, and he has unique lines like "You should've killed me when you had the chance!"
- Before the shootout, he can also be heard talking to one of the fellow gang members about the interrogation.[2]
- If the player disarms an O'Driscoll and leads him to Micah, he will wrestle one of Micah's guns from his hand and make it possible to obtain Micah's Revolver before the epilogue.[3]
- If the O'Driscoll disarms any of the Van der Linde gang members, a glitch will occur where multiple melee knife finishers will be performed on the disarmed O'Driscoll but the latter will not die from them.
- When the Van der Linde gang is observing the hideout from a distance, Colm O'Driscoll can be seen scolding Kieran.[4]
- If the player checks the map after capturing Kieran, they will see six ally markers at the hideout, one for each of the participants in the mission as well as Hosea Matthews. Hosea has no involvement in this mission past brief appearances in the beginning and ending cutscenes.
- It is possible to explore the snowy parts of the entire Grizzlies West region once Kieran is captured and stowed on the back of Arthur's horse. However, if the player gets too close to West Elizabeth, New Hanover or Grizzlies East an instant death will trigger which will result in a mission failure.
- This way it is possible to gather supplies across the map and attempt to reach the General Store at Wallace Station without being killed by the harsh weather conditions. This way the player can change their default Winter Gunslinger Outfit early and also remove the suspenders.[5]
- If this mission is completed before "The Aftermath of Genesis", Kieran can be found tied up in the barn with the horses and Arthur may interact with him.
- When Micah is arguing with Bill and Lenny in the mission's opening scene, Lenny will remark to the former that "When you fall, there will be a party." This appears to foreshadow the conclusion of the final mission, "American Venom", in which John and Abigail marry and a celebration is held following Micah's demise.
- If this mission is completed after The Aftermath of Genesis, it will automatically continue into the fifth mission of Chapter 1, Who the Hell is Leviticus Cornwall?
- The player can kill Kieran's horse Branwen during the chase, but it will have no affect on the story (aside from a loss of honor) and Branwen will still appear at camp as normal after "Just a Social Call".
