Lasers are a hazard found in Quake II, being used by the Strogg to protect certain areas. A player or Strogg making contact with them will take damage, in some cases instantly fatal damage. There is sometimes a way to deactivate them, perhaps by pressing a nearby switch or by removing a Power Cube.
There is sometimes a relation between the color of the laser and the amount of danger it poses; in certain single-player campaigns (Quake II and The Reckoning, for example), blue laser beams deal a small amount of damage and can be moved through at the expense of some health if necessary, but the red, yellow and green laser beams tend to be fatal. But this is not always the case; there are green lasers in Quake II 64 which are not instantly fatal, and there are blue lasers in Call of the Machine which are instantly fatal.
Strogg themselves are sometimes observed blundering into their own laser fences. Perhaps they are under the effect of programming which compels them to rush into battle with intruders without regard for their own safety, or perhaps they enter a battle-rage which renders them heedless to these dangers.
While most lasers can be passed through safely if the player activates an Invulnerability, others physically block the player's movement entirely.
