Robert "Bob" Newby is a major character in Stranger Things.

He was the boyfriend of Joyce Byers and was a father figure to her sons, Jonathan and Will until he sacrificed himself to save them in order to get them to safety from the Mind Flayer.

He was portrayed by Sean Astin, who also played Samwise Gamgee in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

What Makes Him Pure Good?[]

• Funded and formed the Hawkins AV Club with his friend Scott Clarke to make science fun for the inquisitive club members. The club, alongside Clarke will later help the Party understand the nature of the multiverse, saving the town a lot of times.
• Reconnected with Joyce Byers in her adult life despite her not noticing him during their teens.
• Cared for Jonathan and Will Byers, Joyce's sons to the best of his ability, despite Jonathan being wary of him.
• Treated Will very well despite him hearing rumors about his experiences, not judging him beforehand.
• Helped Joyce move on from the traumatic experiences of the previous year.
• Told Joyce to move out of Hawkins, but only so that she can have a better employment prospective rather than for any of his own self-interests.
• Recounted his past experiences regarding Baldo the Clown to Will, so that Will could face his 'bully' (Vecna/the Mind Flayer) and tell him to go away. Despite the Flayer using this opportunity to take over his body, Bob wasn't aware of Will's past experiences with the Upside Down.
• Provided vital clues to Hopper's location leading to him, Mike and Joyce saving him at the nick of time.
• Volunteered to help activate the electricity system in Hawkins Lab due to the only one knowing BASIC, despite being scared of the Demodogs roaming the facility.
• Urged Hopper, Joyce and Mike not to stay behind for him as he activates the electricity system, saving their lives when the Demodogs breached the room.
• Sacrificed his life to save the Party, his friends and the surviving scientists from Vecna under the form of the Mind Flayer.
