“ | I couldn't jeopardize my work with the Movement, and Akiza's troubled past made her the perfect scapegoat. I remember it like it was yesterday. Toby's telekinetic abilities were pathetic. He didn't even come close to meeting the high standards the Arcadia Movement required. Akiza however, was one of my greatest finds. Her powers were as strong as she was naïve. | „ |
~ Sayer shamelessly confessing to Yusei about his role in Misty's brother's disappearance and using Akiza as a pawn. |
Sayer, known as Divine in the Japanese version, is a major antagonist in Season 1 of Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's.
He is a man with psychic abilities similar to Akiza and the true leader and creator of an organization called the Arcadia Movement. He is also Misty Tredwell's true archenemy for killing her brother Toby and also the archenemy of Carly Carmine for murdering her. He is currently imprisoned in the Facility by Sector Security after he was revived and his crimes were revealed.
He was voiced by Masaya Matsukaze in the Japanese version and by Marc Thompson in the English version.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- Psychologically manipulating his subordinates (especially Akiza) to do his bidding, feigning care and sympathy when he truly has none.
- Torturing psychic children for their powers through tests, such as electrocuting them and forcing them to duel where the damage is real.
- Any children who didn't pass his tests he had killed and disappeared to cover his tracks. This includes Misty's brother, whose powers he considered pathetic.
- He is the indirectly mastermind of Misty's death from a car accident.
- When Toby's death was investigated, he framed Akiza for Toby's death because of her tragic background.
- He performed the same tests on Leo (which he didn't pass) and kept him prisoner to control his twin sister Luna because of her greater psychic abilities.
- Upon finding reporter Carly Carmine in his office, he forced her to duel him so she could escape. She lost, and he used his powers to kill her by breaking through a window and falling to her death. However, Carly was revived as a Dark Signer and challenged Sayer into a rematch for revenge on him for killing her.
- His end goal was to create an army of powerful psychic duelists so he could use them as soldiers to wage a war against the world so he could take over, starting with New Domino City.
- While the Arcadia Building experienced an earthquake, he ordered everyone to evacuate. While this may display a show of honor from Sayer, it is most likely that it was to protect his personal empire rather than out of genuine care. This further added when he ordered his "guests" to be left where they are, not caring for their safety.
- When he returned to Akiza during her final duel with Misty, Sayer brainwashed her and intended on using her to defeat the Dark Signers and resurrect the Arcadia Movement.
- During a confrontation with Yusei Fudo, he shamelessly admitted his crimes and attempted to kill him so he wouldn't be a threat. This became his undoing since his confession was being broadcasted to Misty by Yusei's homemade duel disk, and she used her Earthbound Immortal to defeat him.
- While he sought to have the Dark Signers defeated, it was only so he could continue his plans for world domination. This means he didn't actually do it to save countless lives.
- Because of his role in Misty's brother's death that resulted in her car crash and for directly killing Carly, Sayer is the reason both of them were resurrected as Dark Signers. He is therefore responsible for their actions upon their transformations.
- His past is never explored. It is hinted in the Japanese version that he was discriminated against by society and was seeking vengeance.
- However, given that this isn't confirmed and the amount of abuse on children, this excuse is considered petty and unjustifiable.
Trivia[]
- In the 'Yu-Gi-Oh! 10th Anniversary Animation Book' it was revealed that Sayer was actually revived, like everyone else, after defeating the Dark Signers and the King of the Netherworld. However, he was arrested by Sector Security and sentenced to The Facility for his crimes.
