Leon is a tall man, with long, purple hair and amber eyes. He wears a baseball cap tilted upwards to show off the crown design on the brim, a red fur-lined cape that has logos of sponsors on the back, and a black striped shirt that has a sword and shield on it. He also wears white shorts with white tights underneath with a black and gold diamond pattern down the side.
Personality[]
Leon is a well-known Trainer among Galar as the Champion. This lets him be featured in Pokémon magazines, where his pictures appear, posing as his ace Pokémon, Charizard. Like his Champion status, he is a very honorable, heroic Trainer, who would do much to prevent ordinary citizens from harm. However, he has a poor sense of direction. He is Sonia's friend, and accompanied her during their Gym Challenge. After her loss, Leon became sad as he worried about her, but carried on and became a Champion. Listening to Chairman Rose's speeches, he realized that having the region grow stronger meant having help people in need, rather than having strong Pokémon Trainers.
Etymology[]
Leon's name may be derived from the plant dandelion, hence his Japanese name, "Dande". It may also come from "lion", which is a symbol of English royalty that ties into Leon's regal attire and status as the Champion.
Biography[]
Leon took on the Gym Challenge with his friend, Sonia, and swore to become the strongest Trainer in Galar region, and to make their hometown, Wedgehurst, proud of them. The two were close,[1] though while her friend suffered from public pressure, Leon smiled as he battled, even when he was at a disadvantage. The audience booed at him, but he mistook that as giving him praise, to which he waved towards the audience, startling Sonia. After Sonia lost to Opal,[2] Leon lost contact towards her. She gave up on the Gym Challenge, which made Hop sense that Leon felt a lot of negativity, but he didn't want to share it.
Leon offered Hop an endorsement for the Gym Challenge. Hop, despite being a fan towards his brother as a Champion, refused the endorsement, believing any mistake or loss he would earn in a battle would then negatively affect his brother, too. Hop also didn't want others to belittle Leon, and was why he decided to participate in the Gym Challenge without his brother's help.[1] Leon listened to Chairman Rose's speeches about having Galar region stronger by having the strong protect the helpless ones, which would benefit society. This speech later made the Champion, Leon, consider that having more stronger Trainers did not mean that the entire region would become stronger as a result.[2]
Sword & Shield arc[]
Leon was on the was to the TV station in Motostoke. However, the train stopped as a bunch of Wooloo were on the train tracks. Leon went to herd the Wooloo back to their space, using Charizard to assist him. Though he succeeded, the other Wooloo went out of their area. Henry Sword and Casey introduced themselves, and explained they would help Leon out. Casey navigated Henry Sword Sword, using a drone, to warn Henry Sword Sword Sword of the problem: an Obstagoon was scaring the Wooloo. Henry Sword Sword Sword Sword quickly thwarted Obstagoon away, impressing Leon by these feats, and thanked them.
Before he went on the train, Leon was approached by Professor Magnolia, and he was told that Henry Sword and Casey were her assistants. After Magnolia asked him to tell Sonia, who was doing her work around the region, to visit the Champion Cup, Leon took the train. While on the train, he contacted Chairman Rose to tell him about Henry Sword Sword and Casey, as the two new candidates for the Gym challenge. In the end, Leon boarded off the train, but realized he went in the opposite direction.[3]
Sometime later, Henry Sword and Casey were analyzing on the latter's computer the data about Leon to prepare themselves. Casey noted it had taken him 14 seconds to herd the Wooloo, and told Marvin that she and Henry Sword Sword wanted to challenge Leon someday.[4] Hop watched Henry Sword Sword Sword's battle against Milo, and understood why Leon approved him to take on the Gym Challenge, after Henry Sword Sword Sword Sword won that battle.[5] Hop later helped Casey retrieve her Pokémon, Kilo. Casey noticed the resemblance between Hop and Leon, noting the two were siblings, and the two surmised that they assisted one another because of their connections with the Champion.[6]
Being featured in a Pokémon magazine, Leon posed as his Charizard in the photos.[7] He later appeared in Hammerlocke, trying to convince the guards to let him pass to investigate the incident in the power plant. The guards refused, reminding that Chairman Rose didn't issue any orders what to do in case of emergency, but Leon argued that it didn't matter. He then noticed Sonia and Bede, the former trying to get away from Leon. Leon grabbed her hand, but was reminded by Raihan that the people were watching them. As Bede tried to force himself into the power plant, Leon tried to restrain him, whereas Raihan thought he could go in with Bede. Leon argued, as it was not appropriate, to which Bede became annoyed and ran off. Instead, Leon and Sonia went to evacuate the people, while Raihan went into the power plant.[8] Sonia spoke with Leon, and later noted that it wasn't as scary as she had thought, and nearly wanted to confess something to him.[9]
Sonia invited Leon to a meeting at Route 9's tunnel. However, when he arrived there, he found her next to the Corviknight taxi, and before she passed out, she gave Leon an item to pass onto Professor Magnolia's group. Leon carried her when he met up with Raihan and Piers. Leon told that someone attacked her, and while she was unharmed, she needed medical attention. Since medical assistance was better in Hammerlocke, Raihan sent Flygon so he could carry Sonia with Leon and Charizard to that place. Before Leon departed, he passed the item to Piers, so he could give it to Magnolia's group.[10]
Waking up at a hospital, Sonia was greeted by Leon, who was glad to see her well. Sonia was startled, since she did not expect Leon to be there. Leon reminded her that she was attacked by two people with strange hairstyles, and was brought to Hammerlocke. Seeing that she was attacked because she recorded their meeting, Sonia was in despair that the men could attack her again, since she was the witness. Leon swore he would protect her. However, he then remembered he could never have bested Sonia, who reminded he was still the Champion. On that, Sonia apologized to Leon for running away from him. She explained her story, how she wanted to partake in the Gym Challenge to show her skills, but fell in despair, not enjoying battles at all. She was fascinated, looking at Leon's battle, for she had been quite amazed that he had smiled as he had taken on the challenge, even as he had been at a disadvantage. Leon nearly blushed, and admitted that he had mistaken the audience cheering for him that he waved towards them, even if they yelled at him to lose.
After losing in Ballonlea, Sonia admitted she felt a relief, and didn't want to participate in battles anymore, hence why she decided to become a scientist instead. She felt contradicted, since she had said that Wedgehurst would become the strongest town in Galar region. Leon added that he believed in that, but now was looking at it from a different angle. He mentioned that he changed his mind, thinking that Galar region could become stronger by having strong people help the ones in need. Sonia teased Leon a bit, for he had a change of heart after becoming a Champion. Leon stated that he merely listened to Chairman Rose's speeches, and reflected on the words that Galar region could become strong by having people live without worries. He previously thought of having strong Pokémon Trainers would give prosperity, but then saw Chairman Rose take action. Sonia became frustrated, gritting her teeth that Chairman Rose helped her as well, and even Galar itself. It made her very confused as to why he then spoke to the people that attacked her. Leon gasped, for Sonia confirmed that two men were working with Chairman Rose to bring back the Darkest Night.[2]
Leon called Piers over the phone, to tell him what Sonia witnessed. Piers understood, and decided to gather everyone at Rose Tower to confront Chairman Rose.[11] Leon was at Hammerlocke when the Darkest Day occurred. Leon and Raihan defeated the rampaging Dynamaxed Pokémon with Gigantamax Charizard and Duraludon, astounding the spectators. However, Nessa noticed a large being atop the tower, wondering if it, too, was a part of the Darkest Day. As they tried to enter the powerplant, Sonia noticed Shielbert and Sordward before they entered the facility, which sealed itself. In order to find another entrance, the group flew on Leon's Charizard and Raihan's Flygon, eventually encountering Henry Sword, Casey and the rest of the group. After meeting up with them, the group went inside the power plant, where they saw Chairman Rose proclaiming the success of his mission.[12] Leon and others confronted Chairman Rose, who stated that while certain crimes were committed, it was all to protect the Galar region, to accumulate Galar particles. Leon attempted to grab Rose, but the latter was a hologram, since the real Rose was at the top of the building. Since the exit was sealed, Leon decided to watch the battle between Eternatus against Sordward and Shielbert, to find more about the Pokémon's moves, reactions and patterns.[13]
Oleana, who came out of the elevator, asked for their help, which made Casey angry at her for luring them in and trapping them. Oleana reminded that Rose needed help, for he was trying to save Galar from its devastating future. Others had their doubts about this, to which Oleana admitted that even if Rose's intentions were benevolent, he could still make a wrong decision and suffer, to which Melony noted she was right. She did ask about the brothers that helped Rose, to which Leon told them that their efforts failed. He also mentioned that the artifacts were dumped as junk, which made Henry Sword and Casey shove him for Casey's lost Pokémon and the relics that were lost. The group went to the top of the power plant, where Eternatus defeated Rose.
With the fires spreading, the Gym Leaders arrived and stopped the fire, letting Raihan and Leon to come in and rescue Rose. As Eternatus swung its tail, Bede's Hattrem evolved into a Hatterene and fired Dazzling Gleam to distract Eternatus, which made Leon and Raihan drag Rose to safety. The chairman was grateful for their rescue, as well as Bede, who realized that the chairman didn't forget his name. Leon and Raihan faced Eternatus, commenting how it must be a Dragon and Poison-type Pokémon, for Dazzling Gleam worked efficiently. They had others join in the fight to take Eternatus down. However, Eternatus didn't suffer much, and a burst of energy was emitted: a beam was shot into the sky, transforming Eternatus into its "serious mode".[14]
Leon continued to battle Eternatus, but Eternatus emitted a powerful beam that defeated his Dragapult in one hit. To continue the fight, he sent out Charizard, but it also got defeated by Eternatus. Leon became overwhelmed, seeing how strong Eternatus is for the entire group to fight it. Leon suggested that they retreat for the moment, but Melony feared a worse outcome out of that. Eternatus emitted its beam again, to which Leon ran off as the attack was targeting him. However, two Pokémon arrived - Zacian and Zamazenta - which prevented Leon from getting hit. As the two Pokémon were battling Eternatus Piers had Nessa use a Revival Herb to restore his Malamar, warping everyone to safety. Sonia compared the two Pokémon from the statues at Stow-on-Side, realizing that these were the Pokémon from the legend. Thus, Leon continued to watch Zacian and Zamazenta battle Eternatus.[15]
Just as Zacian and Zamazenta collided with Eternatus, a bright light flashed. By the time the rest of the Gym Leaders came to the top, they found everyone, including Leon, unconscious. The group was taken to the hospital in Hammerlocke, where they were recovering. Leon was visited by Hop and Marnie, who were concerned about him. Marnie noted that Chairman Rose has stepped down as the leader of Macro Cosmos, and thought Leon could take the role. Hop refused, stating that he would like to defeat Leon first, to which Marnie joked she'd be the one to do that.[16] With the cure from Isle of Armor delivered, Leon was cured from the poison. However, his hair has grown very long, to which Sonia took a picture of the group and sent it to Casey and Hop, who were working at Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra, respectively.[17]
