Leo Lionni (1910-1999) is best known as the author and illustrator of forty children's picture books including the Caldecott Honor recipients Inch By Inch (1961), Swimmy (1964), Frederick (1968), and Alexander And The Wind-Up Mouse (1970). In addition to his children's work, Lionni worked in advertising, was the art director of Fortune magazine for twelve years, and was a well regarded painter and sculptor.
