The oldest mosque in Egypt (and Africa) surviving in its original form. The minaret dates from at least the 13th century with much of the mosque being older than this. The minaret is said to be inspired by the one at the Great Mosque of Samarra in Iraq. Picture taken in December 2001.

The minaret of ibn Tulun is the only minaret in all of Cairo which has its stairs on the outside. Its inspiration was of the minaret at the Great Mosque in Samarra in Iraq, from where Ahmad ibn Tulun came before coming to Cairo. This is not the minaret in its original state (876 - 869 CE). It was updated and the base was extended in the late 13th century by a Mamluk sultan known as Lajin.
