San Diego Comic-Con, commonly abbreviated as Comic-Con or SDCC, is a four day, non-profit multi-genre entertainment event held annually in San Diego, California. Bandai Namco is a frequent vendor/attendee at SDCC, generally featuring various Pac-Man booths and exhibits at the event.
History[]
San Diego Comic-Con was originally founded as the Golden State Comic Book Convention in 1970 by Shel Dorf, Richard Alf, Ken Krueger, Ron Graf, and Mike Towry. It was later renamed to San Diego Comic Book Convention, but later simplified to just San Diego Comic-Con.
There is also a "New York Comic Con" (or NYCC) held annually in New York City, which first launched in 2006. However, it is not directly connected to San Diego Comic-Con, and is classified as "for profit" rather than nonprofit. New York Comic Con also generally features Namco and Pac-Man booths.
Comic-Con Museum[]
The Comic-Con Museum is a dedicated museum based on the San Diego Comic-Con event. It was first opened in 2021, and is open year-round.
Before the museum's opening, it was announced in late 2020 that Pac-Man would be the "second inductee into the Museum's Character Hall of Fame".[1] Following this, a YouTube livestream was held celebrating Pac-Man's "induction", explaining Pac-Man's significance to pop culture. Notably, the stream featured an interview with Tadashi Yamashita, the lead artist for Pac-Man who went largely uncredited prior to the event. When the museum properly opened, a full Pac-Man exhibit was created, featuring various arcade machines and vintage merchandise on display.
In July 2022, a private event was held at the Comic-Con Museum to promote the upcoming Pac-Man World Re-Pac.
Trivia[]
- At NYCC 2021, the Tamashii Nations booth announced a S.H. Figuarts figure of Ms. Pac-Man. This figure has still not commercially released, and was possibly canceled.
