The previous 2021 Franchising New Zealand Survey identified: - 590 franchising brands and an estimated 32,000 franchisees in New Zealand. - Business Format Franchising turnover of $36.8 billion, up from $27.6 billion in 2017 – an increase of 33%. - Total franchise sector turnover (including Motor Vehicle Sales and Fuel Retail) up 27% from $46.1 billion to $58.5 billion. - Total Business Format Franchising employment grew by 32,620 (or 26%) to 156,820. Shelf space. The Holy Grail of FMCG and hardware retailers seeking to sell through Bunnings and other major Australian retailers. Retail executives know that winning prime shelf space at Bunnings can significantly boost sales. Achieving it is another matter entirely. The Westpac Melbourne Institute Consumer Sentiment index dropped by 2.4% last month, marking the second consecutive month of decline, with Aussie households feeling the pinch from ongoing inflation and elevated interest rates. In a time of uncertainty, consumers are looking for brands they can trust (especially in light of the ACCC supermarket inquiry) so here are three actions you can take to show your business means what it says: MORE SOCIAL PROOF Social proof can take the form of written reviews, video testimonials, photos of people using your product or service. Social proof, simply put, is evidence that others like and trust your product. Seeing this causes your potential customers to think “maybe I should like and trust this brand too, since so many other people do”. It utilises the power of normative social influence, if you want to get all psychological about it. BRAND MARKETING Customers need to know they can trust you before they hand over their money. Almost anyone can open an e-commerce store. But when they see your brand at a bus stop, hear you on the radio and also see you on Instagram and Facebook, they begin to feel you are legitimate and therefore can be trusted to do what you say you’re going to do. While many marketing activities look to drive a direct sale, a strategic multichannel approach includes brand-building exercises for a long-term play. This may include billboards, TVCs, brand ads, and event marketing. PROOF POINTS Prove the legitimacy of your claims by using statistics, facts and case studies to establish credibility. Reference experts or better yet, have them publicly endorse you. 🚨 Commerce Commission blocks Foodstuffs merger proposal 🚨 The New Zealand Commerce Commission has declined the proposed merger of Foodstuffs North Island Limited and Foodstuffs South Island, citing concerns that it would substantially lessen competition in the grocery marketing . If approved, this merger would have combined the two co-operatives into one national grocery entity, further consolidating the market and reducing the number of major grocery buyers from three to two, alongside Woolworths. 🛒 What this means - The merger was expected to result in greater buyer power for the combined entity, potentially lowering prices for suppliers but raising concerns about reduced supplier innovation, choice, and consumer product quality. - Consumers could face fewer choices in grocery products and higher risks of price coordination between the two dominant players, Foodstuffs and Woolworths. - This decision also emphasises the importance of maintaining competitive dynamics in the sector, ensuring room for new players and a diverse retail landscape. 💡 Pros - Protects consumers from potential price hikes and maintains competitive pressure in the grocery sector. - Supports smaller suppliers by preventing a significant reduction in buyers for their products. - Helps avoid price coordination risks between the two largest grocery retailers. ⚠️ Cons - Foodstuffs argued the merger could have generated operational efficiencies, benefiting suppliers with lower costs and providing more consistent pricing across the country. - Missed opportunity for greater scale economies that could reduce prices for consumers over time. - Foodstuffs operates over 500 stores across New Zealand under its three main banners: PAK'nSAVE New World, and Four Square ​ - In comparison, Woolworths New Zealand (formerly known as Countdown Supermarkets has 194 supermarkets directly, along with approx. 70 SuperValue and FreshChoice stores​. - This highlights the scale and competition between the two major players in New Zealand's grocery sector and the efficiencies Foodstuffs New Zealand would have gained would have been significant. - Also Foodstuffs stores are franchise operated. While individual owner/operators are a core part of each and every community, they are also in business to make money. However, in my personal experience, owner/operators are typically well balanced in making a reasonable profit, being a great employer and contribution positively to their community. When they face competition they are fierce rivals. 🤔 For New Zealand shoppers and the grocery market, the decision ensures competition remains robust, though Foodstuffs misses out on potential efficiency gains. I can see both sides of the coin, but if I was Foodstuffs, this move makes perfect sense.

As widely expected, Tuesday nights budget put a little meat on the bones of the previously announced ‘Future made in Australia’. The emphasis, also as expected, is on the value adding of resources, and support for the technology necessary to add that value. Unexpected, although fundamentally necessary is the announcement of a strategic review of the current state of manufacturing. As anyone who has ever done any sort of planning, from the most complex, to the really basic personal stuff knows, defining the point from which you are starting is a ‘must have’. It is encouraging therefore that such a review is included in the announcements, although I remain unconvinced that the review will be tough enough to break down the barriers to building a world class innovation ecosystem. On one hand, my response is 'About bloody time' and on the other a question : 'is the government prepared to shoot some sacred cows, trash parts of the status quo across bureaucratic silos and power bases, and genuinely invest for the long term?' Big ask, but anyone who thinks about change for more than a moment knows that the first step is to determine where you are currently, so that you know what to change in order to generate a different/better outcome. #manufactuing #innovation #FMCG

April was 🤯🙌🏻😩🌟📝✅🙃😍😬🥳 all in one month. 👉🏻 Had a whopping 13 new leads knock on our door. 👉🏻 Had our biggest revenue month in business EVER. 👉🏻 Was chosen as a finalist in the Sutherland Shire Local Business Awards! 👉🏻 Signed 2 new management clients and worked with some incredible biz owners in our training + strategy services (umm, hello inspirational magazine editor 🤩) 👉🏻 Officially kicked off being a GST registered business! 👉🏻 Finalised our systems overhaul c/o the incredible @thecartable.co It’s been an epic month, and the ideas, changes, and shifts we are also putting into the place over the next month or so (keep your eyes peeled 👀), and the new level it feels like we’re breaking through in business, has got me all kinds of pumped 🙌🏻 But it’s also opened my eyes to a cheeky lil concept that some of you fellow business owners may too be familiar with… New levels = new devils 😈 Not the Lucifer kind of devil, but things like overwhelm, questioning, and a bit of a struggle to stay on top of all it is I want to do and deliver. For me though, it’s solidified how important a plan is, the impact of automated systems, the beauty of brain dumping and mapping out ideas, lists and priorities. To audit my time and energy, and manage them in the most sustainable way for me. It’s made me take a step back and go “okay, there’s some amazing things happening, but let’s just take this one step at a time”. And I think that’s so important to do - we can get caught up in the doing, that we forget to stop, evaluate the best path of action, and take the best next steps. With that being said, it’s going to be a BIG May as well (ya girl is turning 25 for starters 🥳) and I’m excited to have you along for the ride… I’ve got some cool things in store! Is consumer confidence HIGH or LOW right now? That's the question I was asked to answer on my regular segment on Sky News last Saturday. The answer? Both. While the consumer confidence index did take a slight dip in March, it's actually higher than it was this time last year. And when you consider the rise in interest rates and cost of living pressures in that time, consumer confidence is relatively strong right now. I shared my thoughts on why and also discussed the consumer trend towards feel-good, optimistic marketing. In other words, share in the hope for an optimistic future with your customers (even better - inspire them to think that way) and you will win their hearts, minds and share of wallet. The power of email automation is absolutely undeniable. It's often the number one MUST HAVE that we put in front of prospective clients. But surprisingly - a lot of SME NZ Ecommerce brands don't understand it, or being humble Kiwi's - think it might be a little too pushy from a sales and marketing tactic! As marketers, it's our job to make them see the value in it, to make them understand that you aren't being pushy - as long as you are sending your audiences something of value. Some clients jump at it, some are still sitting on the fence. So I absolutely love it when something like this happens. As they say... the proof is in the pudding. Here's a case study of a new Local Market customer one month in to using Klaviyo. They've always done email newsletters (which have been moved over from Mailchimp) but are now doing a welcome automation to new visitors as well as implementing a drop cart email flow. First month result: Almost $9K in sales as a result of email automations. Looking forward to seeing how this one grows over the next few months and beyond.

Planning ahead for Black Friday, a.k.a Cyber Month? New feature for Inside Retail Australia on how to avoid the nightmares! Dr Jessica Pallant and I have been writing and talking a lot about retail's mega sales and the respective opportunities and challenges they present for retailers. From interview senior retail leaders we heard many brands only participate begrudgingly, and worry about the impact they have on margins and profitability. Yet even after sharing all these insights, we still saw may retailers (even some we talked to!) leaning into large site-wide sales. The impact was clear from Australian Bureau of Statistics data with a weak end to the year overall. So this year we're trying something different. With thanks to Heather McIlvaine and Tamera Francis, we've written a new feature proposing a few ways retailers should be thinking about these events, while there's still time to course-correct if needed. Our main suggestions: 1. Look at profit, not just top-line figures 📈 2. Think long term, not just the weekend 🔮 3. Offer value beyond price discounts 🤑 4. Have a strategy, and stick to it 🎯 I know Nathan Bush, Rob Godwin, Danny Phillips have shared a lot of views on this too. I've particularly found Carla Penn-Kahn's breakdowns of profitability really useful! Australian consumers facing inflationary pressures May 2024 A new survey by the Australian Consumer and Retail Studies (ACRS) unit indicates that Australian consumers are finding it necessary to change their buying behaviours in response to financial pessimism. Read the following report to learn more.
