“Kingdom Come,” the Normal Bias debut LP, finds divinity in the unknown. As the follow up to their self-titled EP, the duo of Matt Weiner (TWINS) and Chris Campion (Multiple Man) have taken their specific sound of “industrial body funk” and refined it with “Kingdom Come.” While it’s just as quirky and littered with aural curiosities, there’s a new sophistication that seeps through and grips tightly.
The first track, “Prayer of the Rollerboys,” epitomizes the newfound elegance of Normal Bias. Campion’s innate ability to make music that throbs and swelters is underlined by a heart-wrenching melody and Weiner’s silky, Gahan-esque vocals. “Kingdom Come,” taken from their EP, could only be compared to Cabaret Voltaire’s most sexy work á la 1987’s “Code.” As the standout of the record, “Holy” is immediate in its melancholy with an awe that’s created in its rich details: space is cleverly filled and dispersed—such offbeat intricacies have become Normal Bias’ specific trademark. “Burn Into Gold” heightens into a rapturous chorus as it simultaneously breaks your heart and pieces it back together with extreme concern.
“Earth Dies Burning” takes the best of 1980s synth hues, even summoning Jan Hammer’s glossy output, and inserts a funky bass solo. Now a classic in the underground psyche, “Embody Control” makes a reprise from the EP with its hedonistic groove and is immediately followed with the lead single, “Falling Down.” The song, equally as sensual, is driven by a chunky EBM bassline as Weiner begs for clarity, offering tithes in exchange for reprieve from his suffering. Lastly, “Win Lose” zips up an album fraught with tension, offering massive synth pads as the protagonist finally succumbs to a fitful surrender as he repeats the words “you win.”
With an unabashed sincerity in their approach, Normal Bias’ “Kingdom Come” fits somewhere between Martin Gore’s darkest hours and Tom Ellard’s most melodic. The album finds comfort in its anxiety-ridden schematics, a dark pop oeuvre branded by its search for spirituality, for a release from the torment that binds.
