The Happy Home Academy (HHA), known as the Happy Room Academy (HRA) prior to Animal Crossing: New Leaf, is a housing association in the Animal Crossing series that evaluates and scores the player's house. The house is scored based on the items placed in the player's house, with certain types of items worth more than others, and some offering point bonuses. When the HHA evaluates the player's home, it sends the player a letter containing their score and advice on how to improve it; if the player reaches certain score thresholds, the HHA will send them unique items.
In games prior to Animal Crossing: City Folk, the Happy Home Academy is unseen, but in City Folk, it appears as a building operated by Lyle; Lyle also runs the HHA in New Leaf from within Nook's Homes.
Appearances[edit]
In Animal Crossing[edit]
In all the first-generation Animal Crossing games, Tom Nook has the player sign up for the Happy Room Academy after they complete their part-time job. Afterward, the HRA sends them a welcome letter and evaluates their home each day if the player modified their house the previous day. The HRA does not score the player's basement. Additionally, some bonuses and deductions are only available on the main floor.
Beginning in Doubutsu no Mori+, if the player reaches 70,000 and 100,000 points, the HRA will congratulate them by sending the house model and manor model, respectively.
In Wild World[edit]
In Animal Crossing: Wild World, Tom Nook has the player sign up for the Happy Room Academy after they complete their part-time job. Afterward, the HRA sends them a welcome letter and evaluates their home every Sunday.
If the player reaches 70,000, 100,000, and 150,000 points, the HRA will congratulate them by sending the one-story model, two-story model, and mansion model, respectively.
In City Folk[edit]
In Animal Crossing: City Folk, the Happy Room Academy is located in a building in the city where players can view their friends' scores via Nintendo Wi-Fi connection.
On each Sunday, the HRA sends the player their evaluation results through the mail. The player can speak to Lyle at the HRA building to view their score at any time, and they can ask to stop receiving weekly letters.
At the back of the HRA is the model room (a room theme chosen by Lyle every month that satisfies a certain theme). If no room fits the theme for the month, there will be no model room, and the area for the model room is replaced by an empty 4x4 room with a concrete wall and floor.
Like in Wild World, if the player reaches 70,000, 100,000, and 150,000 points, the HRA will congratulate them by sending the house model, wide house model, and two-story model, respectively.
In New Leaf[edit]
In Animal Crossing: New Leaf, the Happy Room Academy has been renamed to the Happy Home Academy and is now located inside Nook's Homes. It is still run by Lyle, and it functions in a similar way as it does in Animal Crossing: City Folk, but there is no model room. Instead, when all rooms in the player's house have been built, they may accept a theme challenge, where they can choose one of eight themes to have their house graded on. Every item and exterior house part is part of one or more of the following eight themes: Antique, Fairy Tale, Harmonious, Quirky, Rustic, Sci-Fi, Toy Shop, or Trendy. The player can receive point bonuses if their house has many items and exterior parts of the chosen theme.
Lucky bonuses have changed, and now include villager pictures of residents currently living in town. There is no complete theme bonus in New Leaf, and the Happy Home Academy does not rate the player's basement.
In New Horizons[edit]
In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, after upgrading the player's tent to a house, Tom Nook informs them that all homeowners are automatically registered in the Happy Home Academy, which will send regular evaluations and advice. The HHA has no physical presence on the player's island, but instead it sends an evaluation by mail most Sunday mornings, which cannot be disabled, as well as congratulatory gifts when the player upgrades their house. It is possible to not receive an HHA evaluation some Sundays.
The HHA assigns the player a rank based on their score: either B, A, or S. The point requirement for each rank increases with each house expansion. The player will receive the Decorated Decorator Nook Miles achievement worth 1,000 miles after obtaining an S ranking. The player may also receive tips from the HHA to obtain a higher score for their decorated house.
In Pocket Camp[edit]
While the Happy Home Academy does not appear in Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, the Happy Homeroom serves a similar function. The player can spend HH Vouchers to take courses at the Happy Homeroom, where they decorate a room to be graded by Lottie, Lyle, or Digby.

Trivia[edit]
- The music from the Happy Room Academy building in City Folk is reused on a TV talk show in New Leaf, albeit in a slower tempo.
- In Animal Crossing: City Folk, cranky villagers will sometimes say that the Happy Room Academy once judged their "great-grandpa's" home. This implies that the HRA has been around for a long time.
