I've been flicking through the book "1001 Paintings you Must See Before You Die", and been amazed at the way painters could so accurately depict the subtleties of complex lighting, and 400 years ago too! Some of the titles of the still life paintings are so blunt and to the point, they become almost amusing, so I just stated the obvious with the title.
