Aurora Chamber is a room on SkyTown, Elysia. It appears in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption.

Description[]

Aurora Chamber SkyTown Basement GhorDoor

Maintenance basement.

The room is a large containment facility for SkyTown's Aurora Unit, 217. It has two levels; the main floor for interacting with the AU, and the lower level for the Aurora Unit's maintenance. The main floor consists of a curved hallway connecting nearby rooms and a ramp leading to a communications terminal for interfacing with the Aurora Unit, which is initially blocked off by a Kinetic Lock. The curved hallway is dotted with purple, unscannable vegetation growing in pools of Phazon that remains even after Elysia is purged of corruption. If Samus jumps in this Phazon, it will make a splashing sound. This is the only room in which this happens. The lower floor is a maintenance basement configured for 217's residence. It contains many Circuit boards and possesses multiple small stations built specifically to spawn Tinbots, likely as a means of security feature for the Aurora Unit. One such station also houses a Gun Socket used to upload data into 217's network.

This is the only known Aurora Chamber that does not have an Aurora Access room connecting to it.

Role[]

When Samus Aran enters the room, she has the mission of purging Aurora Unit 217 of his corruption virus infection. The chamber is locked with a door that requires a kinetic charge. Until Samus has the Boost Ball, she cannot enter.

Once she has returned with it, she can open the door. When she tries to use the communications platform, the "SkyTown announcer" says "The Aurora Unit is corrupted and requires repair. Opening maintenance level hatch." A hatch will then open, allowing Samus access to a Morph Ball tunnel that ends with a piston, which takes her down to the maintenance level.

However, before she can inject the vaccine, numerous Tinbots that were in stasis will awaken, and Samus will have to defeat eleven of them before she can get the chance to inject the Galactic Federation vaccine undisturbed. Once this happens, 217 is shown to be purged of all Phazon contamination. The room will fill with steam, and the AU Status Screens will turn on. However, just as Samus is about to leave, Ghor enters the room through a mechanical hatch. Destroying most of the circuit boards in the room with his Plasma Beam, he escapes through the same hatch after being injured by Samus's weapon fire. She cannot open the hatch herself.

This turn of events is insignificant. I'll show you what I mean. Observe!

(shot by Samus) The network's been severed. You have no chance of destroying the Seed, unless you restore the Aurora Unit.

—Ghor

Leaving the maintenance level, she speaks with 217, who informs her that the destruction of the circuit boards has disabled SkyTown's network. To restore it, Samus would have to weld the broken circuitry with Ghor's Plasma Beam. She is tasked with the order of hunting him down.

When she returns, she fixes the network connection and allows 217 to plan out an attack on the Elysia Seed, discovering the location of three parts to a Theronian Bomb and giving them to Samus. Once the bomb is assembled and placed in the Spire Dock, Samus is asked by 217 to set off the bomb on the Spire when it passes over the Seed. Should Samus die during the Spire defense sequence, the game will resume from a checkpoint at the start of her last conversation with 217.

After the Elysia Seed is destroyed, 217 goes into stasis to acquire new data, and cannot be spoken to again.

Aurora Unit 217 briefings[]

After vaccination[]

What a terrible dream we were having. Thank you for purging our Phazon corruption and allowing us to awaken.

There is much to do.

We have communed with AU 242 on the G.F.S. Olympus*, and learned that a Leviathan impacted Elysia and began spreading corruption. We must destroy this Leviathan and stem the tide of corruption as soon as possible.

We have a plan, but Ghor's attack severed key communication cables, disrupting our access to SkyTown's primary network. This prevents us from controlling SkyTown and executing our plan to destroy the Leviathan.

Ghor's plasma cannon should be able to fuse together the severed cables. We must ask you to hunt him down.

Ghor may have changed, Samus. Be prepared to deal with that. Good luck.

—Aurora Unit 217

* In spoken dialogue, 217 says "on Olympus" instead of "on the G.F.S. Olympus". Similar dialogue is accessible in the Logbook after the briefing, under the objective "Hunt Down Ghor".

After Ghor's defeat[]

(If spoken to before the cables are repaired)

Now that you have Ghor's plasma weapon, our cables can be repaired. The damaged cables are located in the area below.

—Aurora Unit 217

Thank you, Samus. We have restored our connection to SkyTown's network. Now, we can execute our plan to destroy the Leviathan.

We must first disable the Leviathan's protective shield. Unfortunately, the generator for this shield is hidden beneath the dense clouds of Elysia and so is impossible to reach directly.

As an alternative to destroying the generator, we have calculated that a massive thermonuclear explosion would likely destroy the shield itself.

This facility possesses the components to create such a device. We would like you to build this device and drop it on the Leviathan's shield.

Unfortunately, the components are too large for you to lift unaided. You will need assistance to move and assemble them.

There is a Federation landing site far to the east of SkyTown. You will be able to find something to help you there.

We will upload the current map data of this area to your suit. This should help you get started. Good luck, Samus.

—Aurora Unit 217

*Noticeably, the "radio" effect on 217's voice is absent when he mentions the "Federation landing site far to the east", and it sounds more humanoid.

(If spoken to again immediately after)

There is a Federation landing site far to the east of SkyTown. You will be able to find something to help you there.

—Aurora Unit 217

(If spoken to after obtaining the Ship Grapple, but before the bomb's completion)

Samus, you must find all of the thermonuclear device parts in order to complete the bomb.

—Aurora Unit 217

(If spoken to after the bomb's completion, but before placing it in the Spire)

We are now ready to execute the final stage of our plan. Place the bomb in the cargo hold of the Spire Pod and then return here.

—Aurora Unit 217

After Theronian bomb assembled[]

The Theronian bomb is primed and ready. Excellent work, Samus.

To drop the bomb onto the Leviathan's shield, you must move the bomb pod directly over the Leviathan and shut down the pod's engine.

This must be done manually.

This is a dangerous mission. Will you accept it?

(Yes) Thank you. Initiating SkyTown migration.

(No) We understand your need to prepare. Return when you are ready, but please hurry. Your assistance is vital.

We will move the SkyTown facility as close as possible to the Leviathan's shield, and then deploy the bomb pod.

Do you understand what you are supposed to do, Samus?

(Yes) After shutting off the engines, use the escape capsule to return here. (SKYTOWN MIGRATION COMPLETE.) You must now proceed to the bomb pod. We will release the cables once you're in position.

(No) Your task will be to shut down the engines when the bomb pod is centered over the Leviathan.

We regret this mission places you in mortal danger, but there are no other options. Good luck.

Development notes[]

This room's internal data is 04_skytown_aurora. The keyword skytown indicates Skytown, Elysia, and the prefix 04 indicates that this is the fourth of 15 main rooms throughout the planet.

The large door Ghor opens and closes is known as GhorDoor. The shields surrounding the Tinbot spawning points are Energy Blocker and Absorb All Damage. The Gun Socket used is called Vaccine Socket.

A portion of Skytown featuring the levitating pods is loaded directly beneath the room in-data. This Skytown city is used for the cutscene during Skytown's migration scene, named SkytownMoves.

Trivia[]

  • If Samus skips certain events via Sequence Breaking, when she talks to Aurora Unit 217, the dialogue textbox may have multiple text lines appear simultaneously, as well as 217 speaking multiple lines at one time. A similar glitch occurs with U-Mos in Metroid Prime 2: Echoes.
    • A side effect of this glitch may involve Samus able to move while one of the textboxes remains. This may have a cutscene model of Samus still loaded onto the podium, allowing the playable Samus to see "herself". The cutscene model has no physics and appears taller than in-game Samus's height.
