Ghost Story Games’ first release, Judas, finally has a name and trailer and looks to be a more extreme version of BioShock.
If you were hoping to see the long rumoured BioShock 4 at The Game Awards last night, you would’ve come away mostly disappointed.
While 2K Games and Take-Two had nothing new to show on that front, BioShock creator Ken Levine did debut his next project; one that could fill the BioShock shaped hole in fans’ hearts.
Titled Judas, it’s a first person shooter scheduled for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, although there’s no release date yet.
For the record, Levine’s last release was BioShock Infinite’s Burial At Sea DLC, and that came out in 2014.
After that, his studio, Irrational Games, was also shut down and he founded a new one called Ghost Story Games, which is still under the Take-Two umbrella.
Levine has talked about Ghost Story’s first project on and off for years, but he’s never shared any real details. So this trailer is fans’ first proper glimpse at what the studio’s been working on.
Despite Levine choosing to let go of the reins to BioShock, Judas already feels very similar. Aside from sharing genres, the trailer seems to depict a twisted sci-fi inspired setting, elemental powers fired from the player’s hands, and style of enemy design note entirely removed from his earlier work.
It’s BioShock but less grounded and bit more unhinged, as if Levine was holding himself back before but no longer is.
The story details are rather vague though. Apparently, you play as the titular Judas aboard a disintegrating starship where ‘your only hope for survival is to make or break alliances with your worst enemies.’
The official website implies that there will be narrative consequences based on your decisions, and that Judas herself may be responsible for the disaster that’s befallen everyone, since the game’s tagline reads ‘Fix what you broke.’
Back in 2014, Levine did say that his new studio would ‘make narrative-driven games for the core gamer that are highly replayable,’ so something with a branching storyline would fit the bill.
As for why it’s taken so long to be announced, a Bloomberg report from January alleged that the game was meant to be out by 2017 but suffered from a troubled development, multiple reboots, and numerous changes in direction.
Judas is in development for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
