This page hosts requests to stewards and global renamers for a username change across the entire Wikimedia network. Please read the instructions before posting a request.

This is also the page where the usurpation of inactive accounts can be requested.

Instructions

SUL finalization

If you are requesting a merge of a global account with one or more unconnected local accounts as part of finalizing your single unified login (SUL) username, please specify which wikis and accounts you want to merge into your global account. These accounts were typically named "account name~wikiname". Please note that we can only merge a local account into a global account when the global account has no edits on the same wiki as the local account.

Making a request for your own account

For changing your username on one wiki:

Please include the following information in your request:

  • the old username,
  • the new username,
  • please sign ~~~~ request with your account for a simple move (first section), or sign this request with both the originating and the target accounts if you are requesting a merge (second section).

If anything is missing from your request, a steward will request more information. This helps ensure that you are requesting a rename for your own account. Please check before posting your request that the username you want is available. You can test that by going to the (new) user page and looking into the sidebar. If there is a link to user contributions, the account already exists, or check via Special:CentralAuth.

Private requests

Account renames are not private, once renamed many links from the old username to the new username will be permanently made. The reason submitted on the rename form (Special:GlobalRenameRequest) is private, and only visible by the renamers. Additional information that needs to be made in private may be sent using this direct wiki-email interface while logged-in.


Simple rename requests

If your rename request is simple and does not involve usurpation of an existing account or other SUL issues, you have two options:

  1. Use the request form at Special:GlobalRenameRequest; or
  2. Submit the request below in this section.

Please use this tool to check if the username is taken before filing a request.

Requests involving merges, usurps or other complications

  • Reason: My real name is Marla Raucher Osborn. The username "Marla Raucher Osborn" was created by another user earlier this year. That user then downloaded hundreds of images which I had created and posted on my Facebook page and on the website of my NGO, or which were created by others who work with me, and then they uploaded them to the Commons claiming "own work" – and claiming to be me when the uploads were challenged. When I discovered the impersonation and copyright violations, from my email address and without a Wiki user account I was able to get the false account blocked and the violating uploads deleted; see OTRS Ticket#2020100710002553. However, a small number of public domain uploads by this user remain on the Commons and appear as if they were uploaded by me, as does the past history of bad behavior, because the impersonation is still intact. I am requesting two renames: (1) change the current username "Marla Raucher Osborn" to something/anything else, to stop the impersonation and to move the prior public domain uploads and other contributions to another name, and then (2) assign the username "Marla Raucher Osborn" to me, so that I can recover my real name. I understand there are risks to using my real name as my Wiki username; I already have those risks in my public life and accept them. I also understand that there may be residual pages or edits on the Commons or elsewhere which remain tied to my name via the prior user; I will try to clean those up as best I can.
