How can we improve Wikimedia grants to support you better?
[edit]Hi! The Wikimedia Foundation would like your input on how we can reimagine Wikimedia Foundation grants to better support people and ideas in your Wikimedia project.
After reading the Reimagining WMF grants idea, we ask you to complete this survey to help us improve the idea and learn more about your experience. When you complete the survey, you can enter to win one of five Wikimedia globe sweatshirts!
In addition to taking the the survey, you are welcome to participate in these ways:
- Respond to questions on the discussion page of the idea.
- Join a small group conversation.
- Learn more about this consultation.
This survey is in English, but feedback on the discussion page is welcome in any language.
With thanks,
I JethroBT (WMF), Community Resources, Wikimedia Foundation.

Inspire Campaign on content curation & review
[edit]I've recently launched an Inspire Campaign to encourage new ideas focusing on content review and curation in Wikimedia projects. Wikimedia volunteers collaboratively manage vast repositories of knowledge, and we’re looking for your ideas about how to manage that knowledge to make it more meaningful and accessible. We invite you to participate and submit ideas, so please get involved today! The campaign runs until March 28th.
All proposals are welcome - research projects, technical solutions, community organizing and outreach initiatives, or something completely new! Funding is available from the Wikimedia Foundation for projects that need financial support. Constructive feedback on ideas is welcome - your skills and experience can help bring someone else’s project to life. Join us at the Inspire Campaign to improve review and curation tasks so that we can make our content more meaningful and accessible! I JethroBT (WMF) 05:39, 29 February 2016 (UTC)

- User:I_JethroBT_(WMF) could you take please influence that a WMF employee does not launch a campaign, but supports what is already starting in some way. you do not watch, and do not listen my friend, not phabricator, not meinungsbilder on dewp, and i have no idea what the other language wikipedias have for that :) you put this on meta where not very many active editors with good ideas are. i know two examples recently, one to have a token system for deletion requests on the german wikipedia, and limits to prevent overworking. i find both interesting ideas fitting together, and i think both cannot be implemented without implementing something into software. --ThurnerRupert (talk) 12:39, 5 March 2016 (UTC)
- @ThurnerRupert: Hi Thurner, thank you for pointing these places out and those particular ideas to me; I'll comment over there early next week. The only person you need to persuade is me, as I am in charge of IdeaLab. I will endeavor to pay attention to these areas. I'm still investigating where conversations around ideas generally happen across projects (in honesty, they appear to places with varying levels of visibility-- userspaces, essays, various discussion pages, etc.) I'd like to point out that Phabricator is certainly one place where ideas are crafted, but the audience on Phabricator is also limited-- not all Wikimedians are interested in using it. Of course, I understand the reluctance to use meta for the same reason, particularly if discussions around an idea really only make sense to have in a local project. However, the only avenue that people have to apply for WMF funding is through meta, and for people who are initially planning their ideas, IdeaLab is an useful place to start. Phabricator strikes me as a good place for a project once an implementation plan has been defined to track things like blockers and associated tasks. Even if individuals are not applying for funding, sometimes it's simply useful to have an audience outside your local project provide some feedback with the idea.
- With all that said, there will continue to be Inspire campaigns through IdeaLab; this campaign has already resulted in a decent level of participation within its first week, and I expect more as the month continues. In my ideal world, there would be an IdeaLab space on all local Wikimedia projects so that they don't need to come to meta, but we simply do not have the resources to implement that, nor am I certain that all Wikimedia projects desire such a space. I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 17:20, 5 March 2016 (UTC)
- I JethroBT (WMF) (talk · contribs), i like a lot that there is a place to create ideas, and i like that there are topics which can be spread. i like particularly that somebody is there who cares. i do not find the way you do it fit to scale to be honest. it does not scale along regions, and it does not scale along languages. it does not take into account the academic year. i translated a couple of idealab texts now, as well from the current campaign. it said still "gender .. march 2015". i find it cumbersome, and i would share your impression that it does not fit onto each wiki, or no wiki at all. but - as i do not have a better idea i would launch an idea campain, hehe :) it would need to be somehow on the main wikis so it gets not language and project blinded. --ThurnerRupert (talk) 09:00, 6 March 2016 (UTC)

- Thanks for helping with the translations! The language issue is concerning, I agree, and something I struggle with. As was done with last year's campaign, I tried to notify translators ahead of time (though certainly more notice would have been better) to prepare some of the main pages. But they are volunteers, and they only can give so much time (and I do not want to request too much of their time either). WMF staff has some capacity for translation in a couple of languages when certain individuals are available, but we don't really have folks who are dedicated translators. I wish we had the budget for that kind of role. When we've contracted out translations services, they are adequate, but clearly read like they are written by someone not familiar with Wikimedia projects generally, and that can be off-putting for readers. Frankly, I'd like to get proficient in a third language as a part of my job so I could do more translation work myself. I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 09:24, 6 March 2016 (UTC)
- I JethroBT (WMF) (talk · contribs), if you do not find a volunteer it is an indication the approach is wrong, or the technology insufficient. i tried to translate this hypercomplicated page, it is tiring and not rewarding. pay somebody for something nobody wants seems wrong to me. but - in the meantime i had a little time to think. there are three main links which serve as entry points and imo miss only a couple of sentences: participate (https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Beteiligen) lacks software, organisations and ideas. help (https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hilfe:%C3%9Cbersicht ) lacks "if you do not find help, feedback / ideas / phabricator". and contacts (https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Kontakt) lacks a link to something to improve / give ideas / get money / give money. but all this would fall into "improve the first contact" or so. for ideas you link to just one page, discussion style. and a person who reads it off after the campaign. not very complicated. to setup the chapters help if you do not find a volunteer - for them as native speakers and participants it is easy. --ThurnerRupert (talk) 06:54, 9 March 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for your participation in IdeaLab during the Inspire Campaign focused on improving content curation & review processes from February to March 2016. I'm interested in hearing your feedback about your participation during campaign, so if you're able, I invite you to complete this brief survey to describe how you contributed to the campaign and how you felt about participating.
Immediate results of the campaign can be found here. Please feel free to review them and let me know if you have any questions about the campaign or the survey. Thanks! I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 02:32, 26 May 2016 (UTC)
Through June, we’re organizing an Inspire Campaign to encourage and support new ideas focusing on addressing harassment toward Wikimedia contributors. The 2015 Harassment Survey has shown evidence that harassment in various forms - name calling, threats, discrimination, stalking, and impersonation, among others - is pervasive. Available methods and systems to deal with harassment are also considered to be ineffective. These behaviors are clearly harmful, and in addition, many individuals who experience or witness harassment participate less in Wikimedia projects or stop contributing entirely.
Proposals in any language are welcome during the campaign - research projects, technical solutions, community organizing and outreach initiatives, or something completely new! Funding is available from the Wikimedia Foundation for projects that need financial support. Constructive feedback on ideas is appreciated, and collaboration is encouraged - your skills and experience may help bring someone else’s project to life. Join us at the Inspire Campaign so that we can work together to develop ideas around this important and difficult issue. With thanks,

Translation request for New Readers Inspire Campaign-- and thanks!
[edit]Hi there! I'm contacting you because you've volunteered your time in the past to help translate Inspire Campaigns, or you've expressed an interest about helping to translate. We have a new campaign starting soon about new readers, as we try to encourage contributors to develop ideas on how to inform and invite people to use Wikipedia, especially in places where folks are not aware of it. There are two pages that will need translation:
There will be one additional page for translation that includes the questions we will be asking idea creators when they submit ideas for the campaign. I will notify you when that prose is ready.
Finally, thank you for your support; it's very important to me that these campaigns are accessible to folks across non-English Wikimedia projects, and I wouldn't be able to do that without your time and effort. In appreciation, I'd like to send you a postcard from Chicago where I reside. If you'd like to receive a postcard from me, please e-mail me with an address I contact you at to my work e-mail, cschillingwikimedia.org. I realize this is private information, so if you would prefer not to receive a postcard, that is understandable. Your work to make our projects accessible to everyone is no less appreciated. Please let me know if you have any questions about the prose regarding translation. Thanks, I JethroBT (WMF) 20:33, 8 January 2018 (UTC)
Timeless Newsletter • Issue 1
[edit]Welcome to the first issue of the Timeless newsletter! This issue is being sent or forwarded to everyone who has at some point expressed an interest in the project, give or take, as well as a couple of other potentially relevant pages, so if you would like to continue (or start) receiving this newsletter directly, please sign up for further updates on the meta page.
The news:
The Timeless grant has been selected for funding, and the project is now underway!
While I've had a somewhat slow start working on the project for health reasons, I'm pleased to announce that everything described in the proposal is now either happening, or on its way to happening.
Current progress:
- The project now has a hub on Meta to serve as a directory for the various related pages, workboards, and local discussions and help pages. It's probably incomplete, especially with regards to specific language projects that might have local pages for Timeless, so if you know of others, please add them!
- Outreach: I've been talking to various people and groups directly about skinning, desktop/mobile interfaces, project management, specific component support, and other things, and have begun to compile a very shoddy list of skinning problems and random issues on mw.org based on this. Some of this may inform the direction of this project, or possibly this project will result in building a more proper list that can then be used for other things. We shall see.
- Some development - task triage, code review, bug fixing, and various rabbit holes involving ...overflows.
General plan for the future:
- Triage the rest of the workboard.
- Catch up with all the talkpages and other bug reports that have been left various other places that are not the project workboard
- Do all the bug fixes/features/other things!
- Some proposals aimed at Commons and Wikisource in particular (maybe, we'll see)
Essentially, the grant as written shall be carried out. This was the plan, and remains the plan. Timelines remain fuzzy, but while there have been some initial delays, I don't particularly expect the timeline for project as a whole to change a whole lot.
Also, for anyone at Wikimania right now: I am also at Wikimania. Come talk to me in person!
Thank you all for your interest and support thus far!

The 2021 Community Wishlist Survey is now open! This survey is the process where communities decide what the Community Tech team should work on over the next year. We encourage everyone to submit proposals until the deadline on 30 November, or comment on other proposals to help make them better. The communities will vote on the proposals between 8 December and 21 December.
The Community Tech team is focused on tools for experienced Wikimedia editors. You can write proposals in any language, and we will translate them for you. Thank you, and we look forward to seeing your proposals!
18:26, 20 November 2020 (UTC)
We invite all registered users to vote on the 2021 Community Wishlist Survey. You can vote from now until 21 December for as many different wishes as you want.
In the Survey, wishes for new and improved tools for experienced editors are collected. After the voting, we will do our best to grant your wishes. We will start with the most popular ones.
We, the Community Tech, are one of the Wikimedia Foundation teams. We create and improve editing and wiki moderation tools. What we work on is decided based on results of the Community Wishlist Survey. Once a year, you can submit wishes. After two weeks, you can vote on the ones that you're most interested in. Next, we choose wishes from the survey to work on. Some of the wishes may be granted by volunteer developers or other teams.
We are waiting for your votes. Thank you!

Testing?
[edit]Hi, I noticed your edits on Tech/News/2021/41 page. Were you testing something? What exactly were you trying to achieve? Maybe I can help. 🙂 Ата (talk) 17:12, 11 October 2021 (UTC)
- ha, very attentive, thank you! i tried to start tanslating, and could not figure out how to switch on and off this translation feature. and i did not dare write it without it as i have no idea what format it would expect. --ThurnerRupert (talk) 18:28, 11 October 2021 (UTC)
- Editing the page itself means making changes to its original text. In order to translate the page to another language, one needs to use a small "Translate this page" link, beneath the page title, to the center of the page. I see that you already found it; good ) Ата (talk) 16:57, 12 October 2021 (UTC)
- i found it, yes. but too late, it was sent out before. for the week after, how one does to get this translate link? i tried and failed again. --ThurnerRupert (talk) 20:07, 12 October 2021 (UTC)
- A translation administrator needs to allow translation of the page for the link to appear. I’m a translation administrator myself, but Tech News is usually marked for translation by the WMF employee who handles the newsletter, so I don’t want to mess things up. It would be too early anyways, there’s hardly anything to translate right now. The translation is usually enabled on Thursdays (see schedule). —Tacsipacsi (talk) 23:10, 12 October 2021 (UTC)
