The Mycena outpost is a 22nd century ground-based research installation located on the planetoid Mycena.

History and specifics[]

The outpost was a hidden facility established by scientist Janet Hester and her research team to continue the Hester Project in secret after it was discontinued by the Federation Council in the 22nd century. The installation was located 1.3 kilometers below the surface of the moon in a cavern filled with leftover advanced technology from extinct Mycenans. The team repaired and augmented the existing machinery with transtator-based equipment and connected it to their invention, a prototype transporter.

After 53 years, the experimental device was never able to rematerialize test subjects, and the 89-year-old Hester finally abandoned the outpost. The starship USS Endeavor picked up a distress signal and retrieved her. However, the project's disembodied test subjects retained a form of consciousness and began to pursue her. They murdered the crew of the Endeavor, and Hester died near the outpost while fleeing from them.

In 2273, a landing party from the USS Enterprise discovered the outpost, and Spock reviewed its computer records. A Mycenan defense-field was able to knock out a large Mycena creature. (TOS comic: "Experiment in Vengeance!")
