An ion storm (or ionic storm) is a type of magnetic storm that is composed of ionically charged particles. Ion storms can either be planetary or spaceborne, and at a high intensity can provice a hazard to navigation, and the use of transporter technology is impossible.
History and specifics[]
The Marrat Nebula was known for its ion storms, noted as being treacherous for its natural phenomena as well as local brigand activity. (EV comic: "The Fires of Pharos")
The area surrounding the Romulan Neutral Zone in the Beta Quadrant has seen the greatest amount of ion storms charted throughout the 23rd and 24th centuries.[citation needed]
In 2264, intense ion storm activity caused serious damage to several outposts along the Neutral Zone which led to them being out of action for several days. Thankfully, the damage was repaired by the Starfleet Corps of Engineers team assigned to the USS Lovell. (SCE eBook: Foundations, Book One)
On some occasions, storm activity has been so strong that it has resulted in shifting boundaries of the Neutral Zone. In 2269, the storm activity was so strong that the planet Arachnae was pulled from the Zone into Romulan territory. (TOS novel: Vulcan!)
In 2286, as part of a ruse to kidnap a high-ranking Starfleet officer and launch an invasion of the Federation, the Klingon Empire created an artifical ion storm using a generator device installed aboard the battlecruiser IKS Mauler, which had the capability to activate or deactivate the storm at will. TOS novel: Timetrap
In 2369, Jake Sisko demonstrated to Varis Sul how to pilot a Danube-class runabout in an ion storm. (DS9 novel: Wrath of the Prophets)
