A trio of dolphins
A dolphin was a cetacean animal native to the oceans of planet Earth.
In 1995, two colleagues of Chen Tiejun were able to reach Chrysalis Island by wearing elaborate disguises, letting them appear to security cameras as bottle-nosed dolphins. (ST novel: The Rise and Fall of Khan Noonien Singh, Book Two)

In the 23rd century, a female dolphin saved Spock from drowning after he became overwhelmed by an ocean current while teaching himself to swim. The dolphin guided him to shore, and sang to him, communicating some of her memories and some history of the larger extinct cetaceans, such as humpback whales. Doctor Gillian Taylor called a trio of dolphins the “peanut gallery.” They hung around a schooner in 2286 and accompanied her during her examinations of George and Gracie in the Pacific Ocean. (TOS comic: "Debt of Honor")
In the late 24th century, Atlantic and Pacific bottlenose dolphins were part of the crew complement aboard Federation Galaxy-class starships. They specialised in guidance and navigation. In 2385 Admiral William T. Riker recalled the dolphin crew members of the USS Enterprise in a conversation with Commander Christine Vale, saying that they all liked really bad jokes.
