A battle was an armed engagement between different parties. Peaceful resolutions sought to avoid hostile engagements. Battles were part of wars and were affected by military power. In the 2250s decade, the decision of Commander Michael Burnham to trust or circumvent her commanding officer, Captain Philippa Georgiou, during a confrontation with the warmonger T'Kuvma decided whether the Battle of the Binary Stars or Standoff at the Binary Stars took place. History and specifics[]

In 2367, the Battle of Wolf 359 damaged Starfleet severely. The Federation lost 11,000 people and 39 ships. (TNG episode: "The Best of Both Worlds")

Starfleet stood its ground against the Borg Collective during the Battle of Sector 001 in 2373. (TNG movie, novelization & comic adaptation: Star Trek: First Contact)

In the 2410s, the Khitomer Alliance commissioned holographic training scenarios of historical space battles to train its fleets' officer. Such scenarios included the fall of Starbase 1 and the Battle of the Binary Stars. (STO - Rise of Discovery missions: "Starbase 1", "Battle at the Binary Stars")

In 2554, the Battle of Procyon V was a pivotal event in the Temporal Cold War. It involved factions from various parts of the timeline, and was repeated when participants changed the timeline during the engagement. (STO - Future Proof mission: "Ragnarok")
