2218 was, on Earth's calendar, the 19th year of the 23rd century, and the ninth year of the 2210s decade. Besides this time period's Human dates, in stardates this era begins with stardate 2218.0^[1] in some systems of dating, and includes part of a range of reference stardate 1/51 in others.^[2] The year 2218 coincides with the Klingon Year of Kahless 844, at least in part including the month Merruthj.^[3]

The USS Sentry becomes the first Federation Starfleet vessel to encounter a warship from the Klingon Empire, the IKV Devisor, near Gamma Demetrius.^[4]
The USS Ranger is destroyed by Klingons during a disastrous first contact with Agbar IV.^[5]
The Zeon colony on Ekos is established shortly after this year.^[6]
By this year Vina's teachers judged that she had the skill and talent to become a professional dancer, but she lacked the discipline and desire.^[7]

Ngoj, head of the noble House of Ngoj, is killed fighting Romulans on Nequencia.^[3]
Qagh the Albino born to the House of Ngoj on Qo'noS. His mother orders the deformed infant slain, but he is simply left to the elements, and is acquired by Orion pirates.^[3]

Imperial Starfleet carries out General Order 24, exterminating all life on Qo'noS, the Klingon homeworld. The planet is then claimed by the growing Terran Empire.^[8]

This year is cited as the first contact between the Federation and the Klingon Empire, originally in the ST reference: Star Trek Chronology and later in many other derivative works, such as the library files of the TOS video game: Starfleet Academy Starship Bridge Simulator. The Chronology cites a deleted line of dialogue from the script of TOS episode: "Day of the Dove", described as fifty years prior to 2268, logically deriving the contact date of 2218. This is supported by Spock's comment about it having been over 70 years of hostility in 2293, in TOS movie, novelization & comic adaptation: The Undiscovered Country. With the revelation that a Klingon landed on Earth in 2151 and led Jonathan Archer to a first contact and number of encounters with that species, the references to 2218 can be rationalized as the first time Klingons contacted the Federation, which of course did not exist yet in the time of Archer.
