"89Q12, it's not really a name. So, I would like my name to be... Lylla."
―Lylla[src]

Subject 89Q12 was an otter that was genetically and cybernetically augmented by High Evolutionary. Taking on the name Lylla, she was a member of Batch 89, along with Teefs, Floor and Rocket. Lylla believed that they would be allowed to reside on Counter-Earth only to be informed by Rocket that High Evolutionary intended to kill them all. She rejoiced as she was freed by Rocket before she was swiftly killed by High Evolutionary, much to the horror of Rocket, while Teefs and Floor were killed shortly after. Several years later, Rocket, nearing death, saw his three friends in a vision. In it, Lylla advised and motivated him to continue living before Rocket was resuscitated by the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Genetic Experiment[]

Like the other experiments in Batch 89, 89Q12 was genetically modified by High Evolutionary to have increased intelligence for an Otter, and she was given artificial limbs to stand upright. She formed a strong bond with the other members of Batch 89, especially with the new member to the group: 89P13. Eventually she and her friends came up with real names for themselves other than their given number with 89Q12 deciding on Lylla.[1]

Escape and Death[]

One day after Rocket returned from a meeting with the High Evolutionary after the latter had a fit of delirium, Lylla was informed of the High Evolutionary's actual plan to incinerate all of Batch 89 but Rocket to preserve his brain for study. Rocket was able to Jury Rig a keycard for the door to their cage and briefly freed Batch 89. Lylla and Rocket embraced each other outside of the cage before Lylla was fatally shot in the back by the High Evolutionary, much to the horror of Rocket. Her final words being "The sky is beautiful".[1]

Legacy[]

Remembered by Rocket[]

Lylla's death and by extension the rest of Batch 89 filled Rocket with grief and was a catalyst for his pessimistic and cynical nature, with him flying into a rage and mutilating High Evolutionary's face to such a high degree the latter required a mask to cover the injuries.[1] After Rocket joined the intergalactic community, his association with Lylla became listed on his Nova Corps file.[2]

Several years later, when Rocket had a near death experience, he had a vision during which he saw Lylla. When he tearfully apologized to Lylla for getting her and their friends killed, Lylla, showing no animosity, spoke of how much her and the rest of Batch 89 enjoyed the afterlife and being able to fly in the sky, with Teefs and Floor appearing to agree. Rocket asked to come with them, but Lylla told him that it was not his time yet and that he still had a purpose in life, before they shared a kiss where Rocket's cybernetics were deactivated, allowing critical medical treatment to be applied to him, leading to him being revived.[1]

Personality[]

"It really is good to have friends."
―Lylla[src]

Lylla seemed to take on the role as a sort of de-facto leader of Batch 89, being the first to approach Rocket and offer him assistance. She formed a strong bond with every member in Batch 89, the strongest being hers with Rocket which seemed to have some romantic undertones. She dreamed to see the true sky instead of the artificial light above their cage. Lylla was a kind and caring individual, and reacted in disbelief to Rocket breaking the news that Batch 89 was never supposed to be in the "perfect society" according to the High Evolutionary.
