History

Weapon X was one of two teams brought together by the Timebreakers in an attempt to repair the damage they had caused to the multiverse.[1] While their sister-team the Exiles was generally made up of more heroic individuals, Weapon X brought together morally grey individuals, generally hardened killers who would not shy away from doing whatever needed to be done.

The first iteration of the team was composed mostly of former Weapon X operatives, prompting them to name their group "Weapon X". Sabretooth of Earth-295 emerged as the leader of the group and wielded the Tallus on their missions.[2] [3] The group sustained at least four casualties during their early missions, eventually leaving Sabretooth and Deadpool as the only original members. Many of these missions were morally dubious, such as murdering 50 Morlocks, blowing up Avengers Mansion, crippling Doctor Strange and inciting a war between Atlantis and the Inhumans.[3]

Sabretooth occasionally tried to temper the group and avoid the missions, but ultimately, they were always forced to comply in order to be able to move on.[4] Weapon X first encountered their sister-team during a mission to capture the Hulk. Sabretooth was shocked to discover that they were led by his adopted daughther Blink, but they were teleported away before the two could make contact.[5]

They were re-united once more shortly thereafter when the two groups teamed up on Earth-2600, with a mission to rescue David Richards, a young boy held in a mutant internment camp, who would grow up to liberate mutantkind from the Sentinels. By this time, the team consisted of Sabretooth, Deadpool, Vision, Hulk, Spider and Storm.[4]

The team-up proved shortlived however, as Weapon X was given a mission to kill Richards, who would grow up to be a bitter tyrant and enslave the world. Unable to stomach killing a child, the Exiles, joined by Sabretooth, tried to stop Weapon X, going so far as to kill Deadpool. The two teams managed to solve the issue when Sabretooth volonteered to remain behind on Earth-2600 in order to raise David to be a good man.[4]

Weapon X carried on their missions, with Sabretooth replaced by Gambit and Deadpool replaced by Angel.[6] The team was soon sent on a mission to Earth-42777 to assist Iron Man, this world's tyrannical dictator, in finding the Inhuman city of Attilan.[7] The group won Stark's trust and helped him secure the key to the city, though they lost Hulk in the process, who was quickly replaced by Colossus.[8] While Black Bolt chose to destroy the city and kill his people rather than allow them to fall into Stark's hands, the group's mission was still successful, as they had unknowingly ensured Stark's death at the hands of Black Bolt's widow, Susan Storm.[8]

Weapon X lost Angel at some point, who was replaced by Ms. Marvel. During a mission to stop Bruce Banner, the team also lost Storm, who died in Gambit's arms. She was replaced by King Hyperion, an immensely powerful superhuman.[9] Hyperion had no interest in completing the Timebreakers' missions. After learning that their mission this time was to complete the extinciton of mutantkind by killing the 10 last mutants on Earth, Hyperion decided instead to ensure that at least one mutant survived so that the mission would not be completed, while he conquered the world. When Vision opposed the idea, Hyperion effortlessly destroyed him.[9]

While the rest of the Exiles fell into line, Hyperion's plans were complicated by Magneto, who had sent an asteroid on a crash course towards Earth, which upon impact would end all human life.[10] While Hyperion tried to force him to stop the asteroid, he was unsuccessful, and also failed in his attempt to destroy it himself. With the Earth ruined, he decided to complete the mission, killing Colossus in the process.[11] Hulk and Firestar were brought onto the team as they moved on to another reality.[11]

With Hyperion and Ms. Marvel proving unruly and difficult to control, Gambit began lying to the team in order to manipulate them into completing the missions. While Hulk and Firestar shared his desire to to simply complete the missions in the hopes of eventually going home, Hyperion soon caught on to Gambit's deceptions and blasted his arm off. This prompted a brawl within the team, as Hulk and Firestar attempted to take Hyperion down, who was supported by Ms. Marvel and Spider.[12] Gambit escaped into the sewers, biding his time while Hyperion attempted to conquer the Earth. He was soon joined by the Exiles, who had been sent by the Timebreakers to stop Hyperion.[12]

Despite not receiving a mission upon arriving on this new Earth, the Tallus finally spoke to Gambit upon the arrival of the Exiles; of the two teams assembled, only six total members would move on, the rest must die.[12] As the Exiles prepared to attack Hyperion, they were betrayed by Magik, who in her desperation to survive attempted to join Hyperion and revealed the mission to him. Hyperion killed her anyways, just to test if the Timebreakers would send someone new upon her death.[13] As Hyperion executed his former teammate Hulk, Firestar chose to take herself out in a desperate attempt to kill Hyperion, but only succeeded in killing Spider, leaving Hyperion, Ms. Marvel and Gambit as the remaining Weapon X survivors.[14]

Ms. Marvel was killed in the battle, while the Exiles managed to cripple Hyperion. Gambit sacrificed himself to kill the tyrant, ending Weapon X with him.[14]

As they appeared on Earth-42777

Was first "killed" by Gambit and the Exiles;[14] ended up in the Crystal Palace where he escaped and started playing with the Exiles including replacing Heather with Sabretooth and Beak with Holocaust; was sent back to his reality where Earth was devastated by nuclear war.[1] Replaced by alternate versions of himself.
  • Firestar replaced Vision, was there to kill Hyperion and failed.[11] Killed in the backlash of her own powers while killing the Spider.[13] Was NOT sent home for burial, because she cremated herself.
