Cappy (キヤツピー, Kyappī^?, Cappy) is a major character in Super Mario Odyssey, but his first overall appearance is in Super Mario Run, in the form of a cameo. Cappy assists Mario in a variety of ways in Super Mario Odyssey, replacing the regular Mario's Cap. Cappy is the older brother of Tiara who teams up with Mario to rescue his sister.

Physical description[]

Cappy's default form is a large white top hat with magenta eyes, but he is actually a small, spectral being. Cappy can take the form of different hats, including Sombreros. Cappy's large eyes appear across all of his different appearances.

Powers and abilities[]

Mario can utilize Cappy in different ways, including throwing him to defeat enemies, jumping on Cappy as a platform. He can also collect coins for Mario when thrown. Cappy can possess various living and non-living objects throughout the game world. The ability is formally known as Capture.

Capturing various objects allows Mario to scale obstacles, such as flag poles on buildings and power lines. Cappy can capture enemies as well, including Pokios, Bullet Bills, Goombas, and Chef Bros.

Personality[]

Cappy is both friendly and helpful to Mario during his journey. Cappy is shown to be bold, as he is passionate about rescuing Tiara from Bowser. Contrarily, Cappy is shown to be slightly timid and easily startled at times. Cappy is also talkative, as he frequently provides Mario with advice and sometimes information relating to the current location.

In Super Mario series[]

Super Mario Run[]

On June 14, 2017, to promote the then-forthcoming Super Mario Odyssey, a statue of Cappy in the form of the Mario Cap was made one of the objects available in Kingdom Builder, at a price of 2,000 coins. When Cappy is tapped after being placed on the field, it changes to his original top hat form for a few seconds, while his voice can be heard exclaiming, "Cappy!"

Since the version 3.0.4 update, the Cappy statue and the other Super Mario Odyssey-related items could be acquired via normal means. The Cappy Statue can be obtained from the Bonus Game at the end of each 10-course interval and the Super Bonus Game, which becomes accessible by collecting enough Bonus Medals while playing.

Super Mario Odyssey[]

Cappy joins Mario to rescue Tiara, who had been kidnapped by Bowser along with Princess Peach. He is "energetic but a bit timid." In two-player co-op mode, Cappy can be controlled by the second player.

Mario can throw Cappy using the self-explanatory move Cap Throw, in which Mario can throw Cappy in a variety of ways, including a straight-up/down shot, a circular throw, and a boomerang-like shot. Cappy can also be held in place once thrown, so Mario can jump off of Cappy or hit objects multiple times. Cappy can help collect items such as Coins for Mario, and also damage enemies.

When thrown at certain enemies or objects, Cappy takes possession of them via a method known as capturing, upon which Mario can take control of them to help him through the course. Cappy can also remove some poisonous hazards off of the ground in areas where some toxins may block Mario's path.

When thrown at power lines, Cappy allows Mario to transform into a ball of electricity and ride along the line; this is a major mode of transportation within the game. Cappy also informs the player of various aspects of the game and of the surrounding world, such as the local currency that can only be used in that world. He can also be used as a way for Mario to teleport between flags throughout the levels, but it can only be used if Mario touches the flag, and it won't work if Mario falls out of the world. Some find this frustrating, because they can't teleport back up to the surface to save their falling, and it's unknown why it doesn't work when the player falls out of the world

Cappy is the hat worn by Mario, mostly taking on the form of Mario's Cap, but Cappy also appears as Mario's Top Hat and Builder Helmet in Mario's Wedding and Builder alternate costumes, respectively. Cappy's eyes open if Mario performs a side taunt. Cappy also appears as a hat for Mii Fighters to wear.

Cappy is also featured as a support spirit, his ability with a "Strong Throw", references Mario throwing him in Odyssey. When the player equips his spirit, it will increase the knockback of the character's throws. The player can summon Cappy's spirit by using Ezlo's core and Boo Mario's core.
