Aim and Vision

edit

The aim of this project is to coordinate, facilitate and promote the ingestion of cultural heritage related data into Wikidata, to facilitate the cleansing and enhancement of this data and to promote its use across Wikipedia, its sister projects and beyond.

It is our vision to establish Wikidata as a central hub for data integration, data enhancement, and data management in the heritage domain.This includes:

  • establishing Wikidata as a database that covers the entire world’s cultural heritage;
  • establishing Wikidata as a central hub that interlinks GLAM collections around the world and provides links to bibliographic, genealogical, scientific and other collections of information and thereby functions as the ultimate authority file providing mapping information between these different collections;
  • fostering truly multilingual and global collaboration around the description and management of heritage data among people from various backgrounds;
  • leveraging synergies between institutions, helping them to reduce duplicate work;
  • encouraging debate in the community by highlighting and interrogating differences in perspective;
  • providing a single source of data for some of the most popular web sites and apps, including Wikipedia infoboxes and lists.

Goals

edit
  • Provide an overview over all cultural heritage related WikiProjects on Wikidata.
  • Make sure that all cultural heritage related data that fulfill the notability criteria are ingested into Wikidata.
  • Gradually increase the quality and completeness of the data.
  • Promote the use of heritage related data within Wikipedia, its sister projects and beyond.
  • Promote the involvement of a broader community in the ingestion, cleansing, enhancement, and use of heritage related data in Wikidata.
  • Coordinate the activities of the Wikidata community with key stakeholders of the heritage community.
  • Promote the exchange of best practices and encourage cross-pollination across WikiProjects.

Background

edit

This project was called into being in fall 2016 after the experience of ingesting the data about Swiss heritage institutions has led to the following insights:

  • A good overview of cultural heritage related projects and data was lacking on the Wikidata platform.
  • The learning curve for being able to handle the data ingestion process autonomously was (and still is) rather steep, putting the average potential contributor in front of insurmountable hurdles.
  • The huge potential of Wikidata for the heritage domain can hardly be tapped into without better coordination, documentation, and outreach to relevant partners.

  • A Gentle Introduction to Wikidata for Absolute Beginners, by Asaf Bartov: Youtube video of a presentation given on 9 February 2017. The presentation covers what Wikidata is (00:00), how to contribute new data to Wikidata (1:09:34), how to create an entirely new item on Wikidata (1:27:07), how to embed data from Wikidata into pages on other wikis (1:52:54), tools like the Wikidata Game (1:39:20), Article Placeholder (2:01:01), Reasonator (2:54:15) and Mix-and-match (2:57:05), and how to query Wikidata (including SPARQL examples) (starting 2:05:05). The video is highly recommended to anyone who is not entirely familiar with one or several of these aspects.
