Hello,
In order to keep the community informed of threats against Wikimedia
projects and users, the Wikimedia Security team has some information to
share.
Malware installed via pirated contented downloaded from sites such as the
Pirate Bay can cause web browsers compromised by the malware to create a
fake donation banner for Wikipedia users. While the actual malware is not
installed or distributed via Wikipedia, unaware visitors may be confused or
tricked by it's activities.
The malware seeks to trick visitors to Wikipedia by looking like a
legitimate Wikipedia banner asking for donations. Once the user clicks on
the banner, they are then taken to a portal that leads them to transfer
money to a fraudulent bitcoin account that is not controlled by the
Foundation.
The current version of this malware is only infecting Microsoft Windows
users at the time of this notification. To date, the number of people
affected is small. The fraudulent accounts have taken approximately $700
from infected users. However, we strongly encourage all users to use and
update their antivirus software.
Additional details and a screenshot of the fake donation banner on can be
found at Bleepingcomputer.com. [0]

Hi everybody!
As you know, Wikimania 2019 will be organized this year in Stockholm,
Sweden. We are wondering if someone on this mailing list would be
interested in helping out with developing the Wikimania wiki. The idea is
that the subdomain of the Wikimania wiki will be changed to a more reusable
one: wikimania.wikimedia.org, and that the wiki in itself will be possible
to reuse to as high extent as possible. This means in turn that we need a
series of templates etc. developed in order to make the reuse of the page
each year easier.
Ideally, if you would like to volunteer, you could help us with:
1. Giving inputs and ideas on how the page should look like.
2. Developing templates and other pieces of wikicode that makes the page
more reproducible and consistent.
3. Coming up with a logical way on how to archive the page after each
Wikimania, and gain approval of it in the community.
Please send an email to eric.luth(a)wikimedia.se if you would like to apply,
stating your competences and ideally an estimation on how much time you can
offer on the project.
Best,
*Eric Luth*

The FileExporter will soon be released as a beta feature to all wikis. The
planned deployment date is January 16.
Some background: Files from local wikis should be transferred to Wikimedia
Commons if their license allows it. This way, they can be used by all
wikis. But if you wanted to import a local file to Commons in the past, you
couldn’t properly transfer its file and page history. It was a wish from a
survey of the German-speaking communities to find a solution to this
problem.
Now, the FileExporter makes it possible to import a file from a local wiki
to Wikimedia Commons, while keeping its history intact. A first version has
already been a beta feature on a few first wikis since June 2018. [1] Since
then, bugs were fixed and features were added.
If you’re interested in importing local files, please give the feature a
try. Even though it’s a beta feature, you can use it for real file
imports. Please
note that in order to get started, you need to
1.
activate the beta feature “FileExporter” on your wiki [2], and
2.
make sure your wiki has a proper configuration file. Configuration files
are maintained by each wiki's community. They define, among other
things, whether a file can be exported. Exports from wikis without a
configuration file are blocked. Find more more information in the
documentation. [3]
We’re looking forward to your feedback on the central feedback page! [4] A
big thanks to everyone who gave feedback so far.
If you wish to learn more about the project, have a look at the page of the
wish. [5]

Hey everyone,
Terribly sorry about the short notice – this is not a planned thing,
it's an emergency fix. Most wikis (but not the biggest ones) will be
read-only for up to 30 minutes at 07:00 UTC AM tomorrow, 17 January.
Depending on your time zone, that might be late 16 January. It'll
probably be shorter than 30 minutes.
There's a Phab task here with more information and a list of affected wikis:
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T213858
That list is very long, so to make it easier, I've put a list of wikis
that are *not* affected here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Johan_(WMF)/201901ReadOnlyPage
Please help spread this in your community, if it's affected.
