The Long Wait is a story from the Rafiki Remembers magazine collection. It was published in the 1990s as part of The Lion King: A Nature Fun and Learn Series.
Synopsis[]
While hunting, a jackal comes across a young lamb, who suggests that the jackal wait a year for his prey to grow bigger and be more satisfying. The jackal agrees, but a year later, he finds that the lamb has grown stronger and now has horns to defend himself with. Intimidated by the ram's size, the jackal tells the ram that he must swear on a saint's tomb that he had not been the same lamb from a year ago, and the ram agrees to give his oaths the next day.
After the confrontation, the ram tells the dog on his farm what had happened, and the dog hatches a plan to get the ram out of his oaths. The next day, the dog and the ram arrive at the meeting place, where the dog hides in a basket and is covered with a white sheet. Just then, the jackal arrives, and the ram tells him that the basket is a saint's tomb upon which they can take their oaths. When the jackal moves to place his paw upon the basket, the dog bites his paw, and the jackal races away in anguish.
After the attack, the jackal realizes that he should never have waited a year, for a ram is much harder to catch than a lamb.
