―Muhangus, after Kion and Bunga disturb him[src]

Muhangus is a male aardvark. He is the leader of an armory of aardvarks who live in the Pride Lands. He is the mate of Muhanga.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Muhangus lived in the Pride Lands. At some point in his life, he became the leader of an armory of aardvarks.[1]

Marriage to Muhanga[]

Muhangus married Muhanga. Simba officiated their wedding.[2]

Kupatana[]

Hey! That's our den!
―Muhangus, after Reirei's family invades his den[src]

Muhangus appeared when Dogo and his brothers invaded his den. He and his mate grew furious when Goigoi ate a piece of their fruit, and Kion did his best to diffuse the situation. Later, when the jackals continued to steal from other animals, Muhangus and several Pride Landers gathered around them angrily.[3]

Tamaa's tricks[]

Well, I didn't actually see Janja.
―Muhangus, after Tamaa impersonates Janja[src]

While at his den, Muhangus overheard Janja in the bushes and raced away in terror. Eventually, he ran into Kion, whom he begged for help. The cub returned with him to investigate the den. However, there was no trace of Janja. Later, Kion found out that Tamaa the drongo had been impersonating predators to steal other animals' food.[4]

False alarm[]

Our den. It's full of hyenas!
―Muhangus mistakes the aardwolves for hyenas[src]

One night, Muhangus and Muhanga spotted aardwolves scrounging around their den and mistook them for hyenas. They alerted the Lion Guard to the problem, and Kion used the Roar of the Elders to blow the aardwolves away from the aardvark dens.[5]

New water source[]

Muhangus followed Ma Tembo as she searched for a new water source.[6]

Assisting Kion and Bunga[]

Only because the honey badger annoyed me into it.
―Muhangus agrees to serve as Kion and Bunga's guide[src]

Muhangus agrees to help Kion, Bunga, and their friends find their way out of the underground tunnels.

Kion and his friends, Bunga, Kiara, Tiifu, and Zuri, traveled to some mudpots and played in the mud. Muhangus became annoyed at the noise and ordered the cubs to keep quiet. Unbeknownst to the friends, Scar ordered Mzingo the vulture to set fire to the grasslands near the cubs, which prompted them to escape into Muhangus's burrow.

As the cubs tried to find a new way out, Kion realized that there were several tunnels to choose from. He got the idea to track down Muhangus and ask him for directions. Kiara caught his scent, and Kion and Bunga dug through a tunnel wall to reach his warren. At first, Muhangus was loath to help the friends, but when Bunga threatened to move in with Muhangus, the aardvark begrudgingly agreed to assist them. He led the friends to the end of the tunnel, where Tiifu delightedly took off toward the light.[7]

Conflict with Shujaa[]

Hey! Who put these boulders on my den?
―Muhangus, after Shujaa wrecks havoc on the Pride Lands[src]

After Shujaa assisted the Lion Guard in defeating the Army of Scar, his actions accidentally caused some damage to the Pride Lands, including the blockage of Muhangus's den entrances. Beshte and Shujaa helped clear the dens.[8]

Scar's attacks[]

How is that even possible?
―Muhangus, after Scar's spirit appears[src]

At Mizimu Grove, Rafiki and Simba announced Makini's mpando mpaya. In the midst of the celebration, the Army of Scar attacked, and the Pride Landers rose up to defend themselves. The battle paused when Scar appeared in the flames and threatened to overtake the entirety of the Pride Lands. Frightened by Scar's unexpected appearance, the remaining Pride Landers, including Muhangus, fled Mizimu Grove.

Muhangus flees the fire at Mizimu Grove.

Eventually, the Pride Landers reconvened at Mizimu Grove, and Muhangus asked how Scar's resurrection was even possible. Just then, Simba approached and admitted that he had had knowledge of Scar's return for some time but had ordered the Lion Guard to keep it a secret out of fear that the Pride Landers would flee the Pride Lands. Muhangus disapproved of Simba's dishonesty, but Ma Tembo noted that she understood why he had kept it a secret. The herds started to deliberate whether they should leave the Pride Lands, and Simba told them to inform him of their decisions the following morning at Pride Rock.

The next day, the Pride Landers journeyed to Pride Rock to inform Simba of their decisions. However, at Kion's prompting, they went to Mizimu Grove, where they saw that Makini's baobab seed had survived the fire. Inspired by the seed's survival, the Pride Landers decided to remain in the kingdom and work together to defeat Scar. As the Pride Landers looked on, Makini planted her baobab seed.[9]

Physical appearance[]

Muhangus is considerably old and grizzled. Despite being about the same size as his mate, Muhanga, he is more compact and sports longer fur. His pelt is medium brown, and he has a pale muzzle and underbelly. His eyebrows are bushy and gray, and he has several dark hairs protruding from the bottom of his snout. One of his ears is torn.[2]

Personality and traits[]

Muhangus is grumpy and irritable. He is not afraid to stand up for his own, as seen when he put up a fight when the jackals invaded his den.[3] Additionally, he is quite self-absorbed and unconcerned when others are in need of help. When Kion and Bunga needed guidance out of the underground, Muhangus refused to assist them until Bunga threatened to inconvenience him.[7]

Appearances[]

Trivia[]

  • A variant of Muhangus's name ("muhanga") means "aardvark" in Swahili.[11]
