American Apparel is a North American clothing manufacturer, distributor, and retailer founded by Dov Charney (born January 31, 1969) in 1989 in Los Angeles, CA. Charney born in Montreal, Quebec. It is known for making basic, solid-color cotton knitwear such as t-shirts and underwear, but it has expanded to include leggings, leotards, tank tops, vintage clothing, dresses, pants, denim, nail polish, bedding, and accessories for men, women, children, babies, and dogs in various prints and colors. In January 2017, the company was acquired by the premier Canadian sportswear manufacturer, Gildan Activewear.
