Calling all Yamanote train fans and idol enthusiasts! You know how Japan loves to personify everything from food mascots to historical figures? Well, the Station Idol Latch! project has created male idol personas for each of the 30 stations on the Yamanote train line. As our office is in Yoyogi, we wanted to introduce you to our local station idol, Aoi Momino! The name Aoi means "hollyhock" (葵) and Momino is the combination of the characters for "fir" (樅) and "plains or field" (野), so his name is a reference to Yoyogi being an area well-known for its parks and nature. His birthday is on the 28th of September, so Happy Birthday to him! 🎂🎉 #sugataresearch #marketresearch #mascot #idol #Birthday #yamanoteline #yamanote #Tokyo #Yoyogi #Japan

What's Sugata's favourite ice cream?🍨 It's always nice to treat yourself to an ice cream during the hot Japanese summer so we decided to run a fun poll to find out our team's favourite type of ice cream! And the winner is... Häagen-Dazs! It’s no surprise that Häagen-Dazs took the top spot—it has a rich, creamy texture, a wide range of flavours and also offers fun seasonal limited editions. What’s also interesting is how Häagen-Dazs offers a wide range of Japanese inspired flavours such as Matcha, Azuki Bean and Sakura which is a great example of how a global brand can cater to local preferences. Coming in at number two is GariGariKun—a refreshing and crunchy ice lolly and in third place, we have Yukimi Daifuku—a unique mochi ice cream with a soft, chewy rice cake exterior and creamy ice cream filling. What’s your go-to ice cream flavour during the hot summer months? Let us know in the comments! #sugataresearch #marketresearch #poll #icecream #summer #konbini #Japan #Japanese

Have you ever heard of the Japanese concept of goro awase (語呂合わせ)? If you imagine replacing numbers with words that have similar sounds, that's goro awase! Numbers in Japanese have different pronunciations depending on the context, allowing you to create phrases that mean something else entirely. This technique is used to make puns, to help remember dates and phone numbers and it is also widely used in marketing. For example, 39 with 3 pronounced "san" and 9 "kyu", sounds like "sankyuu" which is a Japanese way to say "thank you"! Establishing special days through goro awase is also very common. One example is Natto Day on July 10th (from our previous post) which came about because 7 (July is the seventh month of the year) can be pronounced "na" and 10 can be pronounced "to", so together it sounds like "natto". Look out for more goro awase in our future LinkedIn posts! #sugataresearch #marketresearch #Japan #Japanese #numbers #Japaneseculture #pun

Have you ever tried natto? It's a traditional Japanese food made from fermented soybeans that is famously stinky but considered delicious by those who enjoy it. In celebration of Natto Day on July 10th, we asked our Sugata colleagues whether they are natto "ha" (fans of natto) or not. We are thrilled to share that the majority of our Sugata colleagues are fans of natto with an impressive 70% voting that they love it! ❤ Do you love natto or is it something that you can't stand? Let us know in the comments below! Find out why Natto Day was celebrated yesterday in our next post! #sugataresearch #marketresearch #natto #soybeans #Japanesefood #Japan #poll
