The Rolls-Royce Phantom III was the final large pre-war Rolls-Royce. Introduced in 1936, it replaced the Phantom II and it was the only V12 Rolls-Royce until the 1998 introduction of the Silver Seraph. A 1937 Rolls-Royce Phantom III featured prominently in EON Productions' 1964 James Bond film Goldfinger. In the film, bullion dealer Auric Goldfinger uses the vehicle to smuggle gold out of Britain. Notably, in the 1959 novel on which the film is based, Goldfinger instead uses a Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost for the task.

History[]

In 1964, more than 20 years after the end of production, Auric Goldfinger owns an excellently preserved black and yellow Phantom III (real-life chassis Number #3BU168 Sedanca de Ville by Coachbuilder Barker), knowing that its great strength would be able to hold the weight of the vast amounts of gold that he smuggled around Europe. Smuggling gold out of Britain, Goldfinger moulds the bodywork of his Rolls Royce in eighteen carat gold, weighing approximately two tons. Making six trips a year to the continent, his men dismantle the vehicle at "Auric Enterprises, A.G" in Switzerland. They reduce the gold in a special furnace, which in turn are turned into gold ingots. Notably, the automobile has the license plate "AU 1". Au is the symbol on the periodic table for the element gold, named after the Latin word Aurum, which means Gold.
