The Bee Breeders MICROHOME 2019 competition called for big ideas for small-scale architecture. The jury selected winning designs that employed sustainable techniques with many possibilities for implementation. First prize winners were Jerry Liu and Jesse Basran from Canada who took advantage of Vancouver’s many vacant lots to create small, affordable housing options.

The third Microhome challenge tasked participants with designing an off-grid, modular home for young professionals. The winners were Michalina Linkowska, Wiktoria Ciszak and Karolina Kozłowska from the Poznań University of Technology in Poland, whose Circadian Home adapted to natural light conditions and worked to reinforce a user’s unique 24-hour cycle.
