I throw them with tiny amounts of clay (50-150g). They're essentially thrown as flat disks, with the clay from the centre moved slightly out to form a raised inner ring. This holds the piece up slightly, and allows for glaze to run past the bottom of the piece without sticking. In cases like this where the glaze has run significantly beyond that and stuck the piece to the catcher, they're usually not salvageable. But in a lot of cases the piece can easily be sanded back to level.
