Today I want to delve into the topic of sculpting hands. It's one of the hardest things to get it right when making dolls. And I completely understand why! I've sculpted dozens of hands and just about a year ago I finally got it right. So don't beat yourself up if they don’t turn out perfect every time. It's so common! In this article, we will talk about how the right materials will help to get better results and look into my favourite sculpting techniques. Let’s sculpt some hands!

Leela Chakravarti on Instagram: "I've been working on some inlaid plates. They're now ready for their first firing. I've got to do a bit of thinking about how I'll glaze them, so that I don't lose the detail. In the past I've used a red clay inlaid with white clay and that's been a great contrast. Here I'm using a buff clay inlaid with a red clay. Let's see what happens."

When joining two pieces of clay, you’ll have the best chance of them staying joined if you score (rough up the surfaces to be joined) and then slip (paint both scored surfaces with a pre-made clay slip).
